Oy people might think I don't like Zeldman, but I do I do. Today he points to this article on the state of validation among the W3C members. A demonstrable fact, most of their sites don't validate. Given this fact you could come to a conclusion about the intentions of the members of the W3C, as Zeldman does. Or, you could come to a different conclusion. For 10 points, give me an alternate theory on why these sites don't validate.

A new upstreaming preference was just released. Update Radio.root to get the new parts.

I've been thinking about how to make upstreaming work for people using computers with relatively slow CPUs. Here's what I came up with.

Every ten seconds Radio scans your www folder looking for files that changed. All the changed files are rendered and upstreamed. Files that have been deleted are then deleted on the upstream server too.

Usually when it scans, nothing has changed, so the part that has to be fast is the scanning. We highly optimized this part of Radio so that it is fast, but on some systems it's not fast enough. It's a fact, some people want to use Radio on such systems. That's cool.

So there's a new pref, on the Upstream prefs page, that allows you to upstream only when you publish something to your weblog. It's the second checkbox on this page, and as usual it's explained on the page. Here's a screen shot.

Recently I heard about a new protocol named XRPC. It's supposed to fix all the problems in XML-RPC. One problem it will create for XML-RPC is that if it catches on it will be confused with XML-RPC. I was going to suggest that they choose a different name, but if I did that Julian Bond would post a nasty comment about me on his weblog. Maybe with any luck if I post my ideas here, he won't be so nasty. Anyway, the rules are simple. Take any well established name and fiddle with the letters or order of the words and that could be the name of your new protocol. Here are some ideas.

Hot Rod (derived from Red Hat).
SP (dropped two letters from SOAP).
SQL (dropped two letters from mySql).
Up XML-RPC's Butt (added two words to XML-RPC).

I'm sure I'll think of some others.

Interesting working out the details with Robert on Blogger-to-Radio conversion. Apparently Blogger can not be used to generate an XML version of the content of a site because it does not encode left angle brackets and ampersands. So we're going to take a different tack, instead of generating XML, we're going to do something that kind of looks like XML, but can't be processed by an XML parser. We're going to have to do it with string pattern matching, so are tweaking the format to make that easy to do.

So here's my proposal for Robert for the format for Blogger to generate. It's a sequence of <blogitempost>s each containing two sub-elements, <blogitemwhen> and <blogitemtext>. And let's hope none of the bloggers who want to follow in Robert's steps have this text in their posts.

It presents the changes in the popular list of changed weblogs maintained by Weblogs.Com, but instead of seeing all the blogs that changed in the last three hours you see which of your favorite weblogs have changed in the last 24 hours. It's a more manageable interface, and ever more important as Weblogs.Com grows. Programming your favorites is done with a simple point and click interface, just like the News Aggregator, but for weblogs.

OK, I'm going to work with Robert and Aaron on getting Blogger content into Radio 8. Aaron started working on this here. Now, I'm going to suggest using a different XML format for the transition. Back in a minute with some pointers.

Here's the format I would use because Radio has verbs that take care of serialization and deserialization. Unfortunately that page doesn't have an example of the format. Ouch. Back in a minute with an example or two.

OK, here's an example, one of the archives of the voting for the Scripting News Awards for 2001. This was produced by a call to table.tableToXml and can be loaded into the object database with a single call to table.xmlToTable.

Why use these routines? Well, they work, that's one good reason. And because they're part of the built-in verb set it's highly likely that they will be kernelized some time in the future, so they'll run faster then. At one time xml.compile was a script, that's how stuff evolves in our world. We nail down a problem, let it burn in, start using it in our applications, and then when it's a fixture and frozen, we kernelize it so it's fast.
