This is a test of a new cow-path-pave for Jon Udell and others.

Jon wants to customize the RSS output for his weblog so that only the first sentence of his post appears in the RSS output. As a reader of Jon's feed, I appreciate this. I also appreciate the way he did his work, and documented it publicly.

With any luck this will appear in my RSS output file, but it will be all uppercase. Back in a minute with the results of the test.

Doing a checkout of the new post to weblog right-click command.
It's cool because it understands indentation.
- When I post-to-weblog with the cursor on an outline.
- It grabs all the text, and sets it up as a nested set of unordered lists.
- It's a primitive form of rendering. Something more powerful comes after this.

Lawrence, here's some feedback on the new design for the DaveNet site.

The left-edge links should be a smaller font size, sans serif, to set it off from the essay text.
Create a page for search, and link to it along with the rest of the left-links. It dominates. It's the first thing my eye goes to. That's not cool. The essay wants less competition from the overhead.
Make the Editors Only menu smaller. It matters how it looks to me. Use the same style you use for navigation links.
The bottom of the page is a disaster. Here are some ideas to set it off and keep it from interfering with the essay. Stretch everything out across the full width of the page. Use a smaller font/size (sans serif, same as navlinks, editors only menu). Put an <hr> between it and the essay.
5. I don't like the offwite background. Switch to white.

Something to think about. If Google is actually going to have a SOAP interface, what would such an interface look like? What would it do? What would be the most valuable SOAP calls? Which way does information flow? Should they support the Weblogs.Com ping interface? (I think so.) Let your mind run free. I think most of us use Google daily through its HTML interface. What will its web services interface do?

Writing Solid Code in 2002

I've been re-reading a book called Writing Solid Code written by a guy at Microsoft, explaining lots of programming culture. It's a great review of commercial programming methods, stuff for users. Interesting section about testing as you go. I do so much testing as I go, it's over 90 percent of the time I spend at this stage of a product. So many sub-systems to consider. Where a feature like the glossary, which is part of the lizard brain of Frontier, took just a few days, just putting an interface on it in Radio is taking almost a whole week. Everything is done very very slowly.

BTW, people say the Google-It macro is a toy, but try clicking on it to find out more about the book. I only remembered the title of the book, not the author. Just took a couple of steps out of the publishing process -- and as we've learned, that's always a good idea.
