This is a test post. I'm about to release the new code that allows all kinds of fancy callbacks as RSS files are being written. This time I'm testing it with no callbacks to make sure it still works. This will be posted in both the main weblog and in the Michegas category. Back in a minute with pointers to the two RSS files. It all appears to have worked.

The two parts I'm releasing are: 1. radio.init (to create the initial tables for the callbacks in user.radio.callbacks) and 2. radio.weblog.writeRssFile, which is the core routine. Yesterday I released a new version of publishCategoryRss that sets a thread global containing the address of the category whose RSS is being generated. This enables Matt Mower to do some kind of magic in the application he's developing. That's good. Magic is good. ;->

I'm going to go ahead and release the two parts now.

This is a test post in the Michegas category. If all goes well, it should be written out in the RSS feed, and there should be a tralala element at the channel level with an address in it. Let's see if it works. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it worked.

I am working on Frontier/Radio glue for the MetaWeblog API. At first I thought it wasn't needed, but then I got to a place where I wanted the distinction betweeen using the Blogger API and the MetaWeblog API to be minimal, so it was time to build a parallel way of calling the MWA. That's what these glue scripts are for.

This weblog should now have a <link> element in its <head>. Testing. Works.

Next test -- see if it works for a category. It should point to the RSS for the category, not for the Home Page. This entry also appears in the Michegas category. Do a view source over there and verify that it has a correct <link> element. Testing. Works.

Next step -- release the new macro, do a final pass over the docs, announce.

An Forrest Gump-like moment. I was waiting in line at the pharmacy this morning. A short 70ish woman was getting instructions on how to use an enhaler. She was confused, and after getting it to work (it took a few tries), she said she felt dizzy, and left. Another person in line asked if that was Shirley Temple Black. I thought "no way," but the clerk behind the counter said it was.

New feature: Recent Posts

By popular request, a new macro is on its way -- radio.macros.recentTitledBlogPosts.

With the advent of titled weblog posts, it makes sense to have a macro that lists the recent posts with links and the date-time for the post (optional). You can include this macro on the home page of your weblog. Alan Reiter asked for the feature, and I've seen other people attempt to make this work. It's time to get the functionality into product.

It has optional parameters that allow you to control the maximum number of posts, the maximum length of a title, whether or not you want the date-times included, and the name of the category.

I've got the user interface coded and tested. Now I want to see if the notification gets through to Weblogs.Com for both Have's Handsome Radio Blob, and the Michegas category. Back in a minute. Not sure if it worked. Trying again. My Events page says the notification was sent, but Weblogs.Com may think my site is a ping-spammer. I'll wait a few minutes and try updating again. OK, it's been about 45 minutes (two phone conversations) so now I'll try updating and see if both the home page and the category page show up on Weblogs.Com. Now I think I have the glitches worked out. You should see both Michegas and DHRB on Weblogs.Com. Wish me luck.

Just for fun, I'm now rendering my Michegas category in HTML as well as XML. It turned out to be as much fun as I hoped it would. I added code that notifies Weblogs.Com when a category home page is updated, and I made the code better, more loosely coupled. Should make upstreaming perform just a little better. Every bit counts. ";->" I have to put a user interface on it, and do some testing and then I should be ready to release the parts. ETA -- about an hour.

Earlier in the day yesterday I fixed a simple problem, at 7:43:57 AM. Checked it in.
Went to work on RSS and the cloud.
Took a break.
In the evening I rolled up my sleeves to do the long-postponed work of stream-izing the upstreamer, so that it could upload five files in one shot instead of doing five separate upstreams. To begin the work I used WebEdit to check it out, thinking I was protected. I was not.
I finished the work around 10PM or so, went offline.
At 12:15AM, my copy of Radio updated. It got the version of radio.upstream.uploadChangedFiles that I had checked in earlier in the day on Sunday.

Well my overhaul worked. Tomorrow first thing I clean it up and release it. It's a lot faster and cleaner, and yet still very flexible. It works here. My mind is fried now. Started programming at 5AM. Only stopped for lunch and a walk. How many hours is that? No matter. This is how you ship. Always has been, always will. "curly"

I just fixed a bug. We have two places where RSS is generated, for the home page and for each of the categories. It was generating <cloud> elements for the categories, not for the home page. Now it generates them for both. That's what I'm testing with this post.

We're now up to four subscribers to the Michegas channel, but unfortunately two of them are behind firewalls and will not get updates. There's a pref setting for this in Radio, but I guess some people aren't setting it, or don't know if they're behind a firewall. No matter, the community server will try once and give up. 25 hours from now the user will get another chance. This is how you make systems like this scale, Murphy-willing.

I've started my 2001 awards list. It's coming together nicely. I expect to spend a few more days and then announce the nominees. Now there are nine categories. I'm sure there will be some arguments about who's in which category. Oh la. I'm having fun with it. Questions. When should we open voting? How long should the voting stay open?
