Scott Young: Paolo Valdemarin provided a very thoughtful post on his decision making process around using open source Frontier or continuing under the UserLand license. I have had that question posted by several people and the best answer is that it depends on what you want to do. My advice is to listen to Dave's Morning Coffee Notes and then carefully read the license agreement. If a question sticks in your head or something doesn't make sense, find someone to help you figure it out. People that are building businesses around a particular piece of software have very different issues then people who are engaged in non-commercial activities. There is a whole community of knowledgeable people out there - don't be afraid to ask for help.

Jim Roepcke thinks "Google Boxes" are dumb. I disagree. Yes, there may be some feedback, but I bet the smart folks at Google already thought about this and have taken steps to counteract its effects. Even if they don't, how much harm is being done? I think the benefits far outweigh the costs. BTW, special thanks for the smart folks at UserLand for including parameters for the box width and text class. I like it!

Dave Winer: The Frontier Scripting Tutorial came out on this day in 1998. It was written by Matt Neuburg and adapted by Brent Simmons. I just reviewed it. It's a little out of date, but it's a very good tutorial for Web scripting. Both Matt and Brent are excellent writers who really care about the subject. There should be a few nuggets there for Radio newcomers.

Rob Bender asks, "A while ago I bought a copy of Frontier: The Definitive Guide. How much of that material is still relevant to Radio?" Actually, I think it's all still relevant. Sure it's pre-Manila, but the old stuff is still buried inside Radio. Well, most of it anyway. The important thing is this book will help you learn UserTalk and understand the object database. After that understanding the inner workings of Radio is an amazing journey full of wonderful discoveries. Besides, who can resist a book with a Bison on the cover? It's also available online, thanks to Matt Neuburg and the nice folks at O'Reilly.

Frontier 7.1b30 is available on the Support site for current subscribers. This new beta includes mouse scroll wheel support, an OS X crashing bug fix when coercing objspecs to strings, and support for hierarchical right-click menus. The biggest change is that, on Windows, Frontier now appears in the system tray.
