Smart Tag Stripper for Manila v1.0

Patrick Ritchie: Last friday a question was asked on the Manila Newbies mailing list: is there a a way to automatically remove MS Smart Tags from Manila documents? If you've ever run a Manila site, you know how annoying it is to try and paste some text in from Word. You get smart tags splattered all over your document, a real mess. Up until today your best solution was to take the text and paste it into notepad before pasting it into Manila. It works, but it's cumbersome and not very efficient. Welcome to the Smart Tag Stripper, it automatically searches your new and changed Manila messages looking for those nasty smart tags. When it finds one it strips it out, leaving you with a nice clean document.

Better Error Logging for Manila

Scott Young: We just released changes today that improve error logging for root updates, include additional information when logging macro errors, and include various bug fixes. Philip Greenspun: Manila, the software from Userland that sits behind Harvard's Weblog server, has recently been enhanced with a feature that makes it easy to moderate the comments. This should make it tougher for spammers to abuse a Manila-hosted Weblog and maybe also to improve the overall interest level of the comments. Oftentimes the comments tend to be abusive, which satisfies the (angry) person who posted them but not other readers. The result is emails like the following, from one of my former students at MIT: "P.S. Your blog's comments section continues to amaze. It's like some kind of zoo, but with idiots instead of exotic animals."...

Atom 0.3 Support for Manila and Radio UserLand News Aggregators

Scott Young: Yes, its here -- Atom support. It will be interesting to see how people react to UserLand's support of Atom. I hope most everyone will be pleased -- especially those who had requested support. We just released a beta version of the format driver supporting Atom 0.3 today. The beta format driver will be out on the manila-dev and radio-dev mail lists. Download it, follow the instructions, and let us know if you run into any issues or problems. Multi-lingual Manila

Scott Young: I was reminded today that we have Manila localized in a number of different languages besides English, including Danish, Dutch, German, French, and Italian. Localizations are quite difficult and time consuming. I think the complexity of doing a localization often goes unnoticed and the translation heroes often unsung. To rectify this situation in one small way, we are going to set up a site on UserLand to give credit to these kind people and hopefully encourage others to comment if they find issues in any of the existing localizations. Look for this in the next few weeks. One more thing, we have our fingers crossed that we will get a Spanish localization as well.

Manila: Comment and TrackBack Deletion and Permalinks

Scott Young: Managing editors can now easily delete comments and TrackBack pings from comment and TrackBack pop-up windows in Manila sites. To delete a comment or a ping, check the box below it, and then click the Delete Checked Comments button at the bottom of the comment pop-up window. In addition, each comment and TrackBack ping now has its own permalink, displayed next to its post-time, which can be used to link to the individual item. Update Manila.root to get the new features.

Scott Young: Manila feature: Password-protected RSS feeds. This is a new feature for Manila which makes it possible to subscribe to RSS feeds in Editors-Only Manila sites using any RSS news reader which supports HTTP authentication: This is especially useful for people who run private sites for a workgroup or project or for people who run Manila sites in educational environments where the sites are required to have restricted access.

Another new feature of Manila that I forgot to mention earlier: when you're setting the path for a story or discussion group message, clicking the path field in the Admin box automatically chooses the "set a path" command. One less step needed for a commonly used feature.

We've also released some enhancements for Manila's News Item Departments: News Item departments now each have their own RSS 2.0 feeds. In addition, each Manila site now has a page which lists all the departments in the site, along with links to each department, and its RSS feed.

Modernized Manila

Pablo Picasso is attributed with the phrase "Good artists copy, great artists steal." In this spirit, I took four of the templates released by Blogger in May and adapted them for Manila. Please check these new Manila Themes:

All of these Themes are built using XHTML 1.0 Transitional and Cascading Style Sheets. There are no tables used in these layouts. If you haven't gotten the tableless layout bug yet, then please check out the CSS Zen Garden. These Themes also incorporate Manila's Module Macro, which creates independently editable areas for the sidebars ("About This Site", "Discussion Links" and "Cool Links") and for the footer.

Alwin Hawkins: Now that Mark and Dave have done the heavy lifting, I have RSS autosubscribe implemented both here and at the Jumpgate. Hard-coded first, then replaced with the appropriate Radio macro (I already had the {meta} statement in the Manila template). Not difficult either way, which is important for the sleep-deprived non-geek.
