Washington Post: Attack On Internet Called Largest Ever Around 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, a distributed denial of service attack struck the 13 root servers that provide the primary roadmap for almost all Internet communications. In the middle of all of this was the human concern over Digital Identity, (...) that the Digital ID debate was dominated by corporate/government interests in maintaining customer/citizen information (top-down), and not enough by the humans whom the ID's represent (bottom-up). Doc Searls, in particular, delivered a particularly moving talk on the final day, making a clear case for someone to build the wildfire, human-centric killer Digital ID application. One which is framed in purely human terms, one which will create its own infrastructure (in the same way that the web and blogs did), and one which will ultimately force corporate interests to kowtow to its infrastructure and protocols, rather than vice versa. Examines critically the origins and basis of 'knowledge management', its components and its development as a field of consultancy practice. Problems in the distinction between 'knowledge' and 'information' are explored, as well as Polanyi's concept of 'tacit knowing'. The concept is examined in the journal literature, the Web sites of consultancy companies, and in the presentation of business schools. The conclusion is reached that 'knowledge management' is an umbrella term for a variety of organizational activities, none of which are concerned with the management of knowledge. In September, more than 17 percent of all e-mail traveling across the Internet could be classified as spam, according to data collected by U.K. e-mail service provider MessageLabs. The company's figures are presented in its latest monthly report. "In speaking with our customers six to eight months ago, (the concerns) were virus, virus, virus. Now, spam is priority No. 1." Aye. The last myth (“Web accessibility only helps people with disabilities”) is the easiest, now that search engines rule the world. The next time someone stands up in a design meeting and claims that you don’t have any blind customers, ask them if they care about search engine placement. Then remind them that Google is a blind user who reads the entire Internet every month, and then reports what it sees to millions of its closest friends. Amusant et vrai.
