The dollar rose to its highest levels in a month against the yen and advanced versus the euro on Wednesday, as a seemingly imminent attack against Iraq prompted expectations of a rapid conclusion to a war.
Mark my words, this is only a temporary gain, as the Iraq war is prosecuted the dollar will come under attack and will sharply loose value against other currencies. There stands a very real chance that the US will fall into a depression.

Feedster is a search engine that indexes RSS feeds. I like it!
If you're a Huevos user, you can add it to your search engines list .
And I hope to do some sort of integration with NetNewsWire. It's an obvious thing to want to do, I think. One idea is searches that update their results just like any other RSS feed. There are other possibilities, too. (After 1.0.1 ships I'll take a look at this.) [Ranchero]

Money -- who gets it and who doesn't -- is at the center of the huge dispute concerning Virtual Office Web sites, or VOWs. With VOWs as currently proposed, all listings from a local MLS must be available for display -- MLS member brokers would not be able to opt out or fully control the use of their listings. Consumers who wish to see VOW listings would be forced to register with VOW owners. With a registration in hand, a VOW owner -- perhaps an entity that has never seen the property, never met the prospective buyer and never visited the community where the property is located -- may well be entitled to a share of the realty commission.

Investigators have found new evidence of the violent heating Columbia experienced during its final moments, including a slag of molten aluminum and stainless steel on the inside of a panel that was part of the leading edge of the shuttle's left wing.
Roger Tetrault, a member of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board, told a news briefing here that some of the slag also has been found on interior fittings that supported other segments of the shuttle's leading edge, which is made of a high-strength composite material called carbon-carbon.
"Basically the wing was being eaten from the inside out," Tetrault said later. "We know that." Structures that supported the carbon-carbon segments on Columbia's leading edge were made of stainless steel, which melts at 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, Tetrault said. The wing's skin and lattice work of support members are made of aluminum, which melts at about 900 degrees. Turkey's surprise rejection of a U.S. troop deployment is forcing American planners to rethink a strategy that called for attacks from two fronts.
Turkey's parliament rejected the U.S. request on Saturday, leaving the U.S. plan to base 62,000 U.S. soldiers on Iraq's northern border in disarray.
Basing troops in Turkey, on Iraq's northern border, is so crucial to U.S. war plans that American negotiators offered some $15 billion in aid to try to win over Turkish approval.

Saadi said a first round of concrete technical talks to quantify destroyed germ weapons started at UN headquarters in Baghdad, as UN experts supervised the bulldozing of prohibited missile systems in two sites.
He said excavations had turned up significant traces of anthrax and VX nerve agent, whose destruction UN inspectors have been seeking to certify for years.

We are all getting older, but some of us are getting older faster than others. Three news items last week highlighted the impact of changing demography on the world economy: the latest United Nations estimates of population change; some testimony from Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, to the US Senate on the implications of aging. Psssst, Greenspan Is Not God, Pass It On Forbes US is graying, Greenspan warns Taipei Times Toronto Star - Boston.com
Mr. Greenspan is not a god, right. But I think he is a man with a pragmatic view of the world and the platform to express his view. If you follow his public statements you'll see he speaks his mind with consideration to the politics of the then current administration. Lately though his public comments appear to be increasingly at odds with the Bush administration. His remarks seem to be warning signals to the US about current domestic fiscal problems, a bleak economic future if changes are not made, and what those changes should be. I think Mr. Greenspan is in his endgame and will not be back for another term and this is his way of giving us a path to return to financial growth and fiscal responsibility.
Or perhaps Mr. Greenspan has recognized this administrations "politics is war and winning is everything" motto combined with their discompassionate approach to managing the assets of the United States for now and into the future and he disagrees and has spoken up. I believe Mr. Greenspan when he says "large deficits matter". The right answer, as everyone knows, is to not have deficit spending at all! Paying back every deficit dollar spent includes interest which is real money that's taken out of our economy. When that happens It hurts everyone except the rich. The poor and the retired on fixed income are hurt the most and that simply is not the action of a compassionate or responsible government.
