San Jose is blessed with many vibrant neighborhoods. I try to keep up with neighborhood events throughout the city, but my focus is on downtown/central San Jose.

BART safety bond on ballot

With BART vulnerable to a major earthquake, transit agency directors Thursday agreed to put a $1.05 billion bond measure on the November ballot to pay for seismic improvements that would help make the system safer and keep it running following such a disaster. [ San Jose Mercury News ]

More evidence that the proposal to extend BART to San Jose is bad news. On top of a route that doesn't go to San Jose International Airport and serves future "smart growth" opportunities rather than current needs, we find that BART needs a $1.2 billion seismic retrofit.

So unless the voters of Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco Counties pony up $1.05 billion, Santa Clara County will have a $3.8 billion system that fails in an earthquake.
