How To Exit and Shut Down Radio

It might seem that you could shut down Radio by exiting your browser. After all, when you launch Radio, it opens your weblog homepage in your browser.

Not so. Though it might not seem so at first, Userland has restricted your options for exiting Radio to minimize (not increase) confusion considering that you can work either within your desktop weblog or the desktop application.

To exit Radio, right-click the Radio icon in the Windows status bar and then click the 'Exit and Shut Down Radio' option.

(As a slightly surprising corollary, if you have opened the desktop Radio application window from the Radio icon by selecting "Open Radio" and then close that desktop application window, the Radio application itself remains open. The proof of this is that the Radio icon remains visible in your Windows status bar.

In other words, the Radio icon in your Windows status bar provides the graphical evidence that Radio has been launched and remains open. This makes sense when you consider that the Radio application continues checking with Userland servers behind the scenes even when you are not actively working with it in the browser or on your desktop.)

To summarize:

1. When you launch Radio from your Windows desktop, the Radio icon appears in the Window status bar and your desktop weblog opens in your browser.

2. You may, but never have to, open the desktop Radio application by selecting 'Open Radio' from the Radio icon.

3. If you have opened the desktop Radio application as per 2. above, closing the desktop Radio application will still leave the graphical Radio icon visible and your desktop weblog operational. If you can't see your desktop weblog, you can always retrieve it by clicking on the Radio icon.

4. When you select 'Exit and Shut Down Radio' from the Radio icon in the Windows status bar, Radio exits and shuts down. If the desktop Radio application was opened and not yet closed, it is also closed at this time. In other words, selecting 'Exit and Shut Down Radio' closes both your desktop weblog and your desktop Radio application.

Of course, once you shut down Radio, you sever all Internet connections to Userland and the Userland Community Server until you launch Radio again - though your personal Internet connection (and browser) remain open, of course.
