Baseball, as statistics

"Strength in numbers. A conversation with Bill James, the famed statistical baseball analyst just hired by the Red Sox." [Salon.com]

Of all sports, baseball is the ripest for revealing statistically meaningful analysis, simply from the volumes of performance statistics being tracked and the ample sample sizes. Bill James is the best at this sort of analyis. If you like baseball, reading one of his Historical Abstracts should be required reading.

New Music

Being a Pittsburgh-native, it's shameful that I didn't own any Donnie Iris CDs until yesterday. Now, "The Best of Donnie Iris" graces my collection. Infectious 80s pop-rock at its best. Of note - I used a file-swapping service a while ago and downloaded one of his better known songs, "Ah! Leah!". That's what prompted me to buy the CD.

I also picked up "Cloud Walking" by Bari Koral. I love her stuff (some of which she offers free for download).

Now, I know that knowing the genre of music makes it easier, but I'm still of the opinion I should be shot for recognizing Poison's "Unskinny Bop" after about 5 notes.

It took 2 years to figure this out?

From CNN: "[Voters News] Service finds exits polls unreliable"

But that still hasn't stopped some news outlets from calling races. In one case the trailing candidate was projected as the winner with about 6% of precincts reporting. What's the rush?
