The valley, and America as a whole, had enormous competitive advantages for decades. But conditions have changed in dramatic ways -- such as the composition of the global workforce and emerging entrepreneurialism in other places.

This is what I should have said to Fran Whittle when he mentioned desalination and magnetohydrodynamics as interesting fields to enter in 1959. Were I that cool in 1959 I probably would have already been in grad school. Smile.
