Pelosi Poised to Lead Democrats in House (washingtonpost.com)

"Thomas Mann, a Brookings Institution scholar, said framing the leadership choice as a decision to move to the left rather than the center misses the point. "That's not what it's about at all," Mann said. "It's true Pelosi represents a liberal San Francisco district. But she's also a political professional from a political family who in her first run for the leadership attracted the support of a lot of moderates and Blue Dog [or conservative] Democrats. She will be joined in leadership by Steny Hoyer [D-Md.], who is an extremely able moderate. And it seems to me the two become a very nice team. She's a pragmatist. . . . Any party that aspires to win needs their base and the moderates.""

We're Not in Florida Anymore

"But if conservatives are rarely more irritating than when they wrap themselves in the flag, liberals are surely at their most annoying when donning the veil of victimhood. The Democrats were not done in by Osama bin Laden or the media or anyone other than themselves. Their intellectual vacuity in this year's campaign was apparent well before 9/11."
