"Let's be clear: Trent Lott is not a New South Republican born in the post-segregation era. He came to Washington in 1968 as a Democrat and worked as the right-hand man of one Capitol Hill's chief executioners of civil rights legislation, Mississippi's rabidly segregationist Democratic congressman William Colmer. And when Colmer retired, Lott joined the flight of other race-conscious white southerners to the Republican Party and won Colmer's seat."
Colbert King lays out Trent Lott's past, and it is not a pretty sight.

Lott's Words Repellent but Not Surprising (washingtonpost.com)
"A poor choice of words? What better ones would describe pride in having supported a platform based on race-based hatred and division? Discarded policies? As if Jim Crow wasn't a deadly, wrongheaded affront but an abandoned fashion choice, like last season's bell-bottoms."
I do not usually follow Donna Britt's column, but I think she is right on in her analysis of Trent Lott's statement in support of Strom Thurmond's segregationist presidential bid in 1948.

"Step One is deprogramming the anti-outlining indoctrination you got back in 5th grade English."
I could not agree more. My adult life has been a long struggle to "deprogram" the bad organizational habits I acquired growing up. While I was certainly exposed to processes such as outlining as I grew up, I never managed to link make the connection between the processes of organization and time management and the goals of having a less stressful, more productive, more fulfilling life. As a result, most of my childhood and much of my life has been spent in slough of procrastination, guiltily avoiding unpleasant tasks and then crashing on last minute deadlines. For my kids, I hope that I can show them that rather than being simply one more unpleasant chore, organizational processes such as outlines are a means to a simpler, happier, and more productive life. Kids, I think, need to keep the focus on the end, and the means will seem less onerous.
