Pimp-Daddy Ken sold separately. "Now here's a Barbie all of us can enjoy - the Raging Hormones Menopausal Prozac Barbie. Off to update my Amazon wishlist..." You have a wishlist, Christine? I didn't know that. Maybe you need to make a long-ass vertical banner on your site so that people can see it. Or, have Hoopty make a browser for it.

Made to order: Three new books show the dumbing down of robot mind. "When most people think of robots, they envision walking, talking mechanical humanoids along the lines of The Jetsons' domestic Rosey the Robot, Futurama's grouchy Bender, or Lost in Space's B-9, frantically waving its mechanical arms at impending danger." I didn't realize that robot even had a name?

Rename 'The Two Towers' to Something Less Offensive Petition. Right. Just like they should go back and take out all the WTC references in every movie or book ever made. I understand the sensitivity of the situation, but "the JRR Tolkien book originally published in 1954, the second book of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The title was thus established some 47 years prior to the attacks on the World Trade Center towers."

Google Searchtool v1.5.4 [1.0M] W9x/2k/XP FREE. In a nutshell, this thing utilizes the Google search engine. So, you can either open up Google's Web site and search from there, or, if you don't want to have a browser open first, you can search with this companion tool. Hey, Google is popular for a reason. I always find what I need right away when I go a-googling. Change its transparency (in Windows 2000 / XP). If you don't understand English, change the resulting language options. And you know how you can search for images on the Web through Google? You can do that through this search tool, too. Same goes for those wonderful Usenet groups. Its handy - and not incredibly garish (like I've found the official Google toolbar to be). Gosh, how did we ever get along without this search engine? I must use it at least ten times a day (and now, this interface will save even more of my time and sanity). [Lockergnome Windows Daily]

X-Cube v1.0 [320k] W9x/2k/XP FREE. In all my years on the planet Earth (not counting that summer on Mars), I have yet to encounter anyone who has solved the Rubik's Cube. As frustrating as that little thing was, I couldn't stop twisting and turning it. Now you can experience the joy all over again, thanks to this awesome new computer version. It's not made by the people who brought you the "original," but the concept is still the same. Wanna hear a true story? I was over visiting a friend one day, picked up his Pyraminx, and solved it in a few random moves. He still swears (up and down) that I cheated somehow. Yeah, how?! I couldn't even pass open book tests in Economics. Perhaps I'm smarter than I think I am? Nah. It was just dumb luck. [Lockergnome Windows Daily]

After reading CamWorld on Tuesday I think I've finally come to the conclusion that webloggers are taking themselves way too seriously.
Am I a journalist? Not here I'm not.
But, I'm getting tired of the "metablogging" that's going on (you know, webloggers talking about weblogging and pointing at other webloggers who are talking about weblogging). It all gets so refererential after a while.

The Slow Death March of Commercial Windows Software. Many have already expounded on the idea that Microsoft is playing into the arms of open source software by continuing its seemingly-eternal cycle of releasing ever more bloated, overfeatured, and security-unconscious products. This does indeed appear to be true, and more recent "innovations" of software-as-service, perpetual contracts, forced upgrades, and casual privacy invasions both corporate and consumer only serve to enrage its precious customer base. I am convinced that beyond all of the previously discussed self-created challenges that Microsoft will face lies another, even greater problem: Microsoft is quietly killing off its developer base. FlashSwitch v1.0 [300k] W9x/2k/XP FREE. Did you know that you could turn Macromedia Flash on and off? Well, you can, but you'll need this program. A tiny box sits in your System Tray (programs seem to like that thing), and all you have to do is click on it to turn Flash-y Web content on or off. This is really nice to have if you're not in the mood for lots of moving and dancing pictures - when you just want to surf the more, let's say, "stable" sections of the Web. See currently loaded drivers in XP. What's the quickest way (in Windows XP) to get a list of the currently loaded drivers (including module names and descriptions)? Get out of the GUI; you're better off at the command line for this tip. Browse to your desktop folder for simplicity's sake (usually found at C: Documents and Settings [Username] Desktop). Now, at the command line, enter: "driverquery /V > drivers.txt" (sans quotes). That /V provides a more "verbose" output. Other notable switches include /FO (which formats the output as a table, list, or comma separated values) and /SI (which provides details about any signed driver). Open that freshly-created drivers.txt file and you'll be in business. On a more entertaining note, do you remember the music that played when you first started Windows XP? Ya know, the one that sounded like an Enigma tune? If you wanna hear it again, you can find it at C: WINDOWS system32 oobe images title.wma. Of course, if you want to free up 3 MB worth of space, you can delete it and the intro.wmv file sitting next to it. Eat your heart out, Enya. [Lockergnome Windows Daily]

Note that this requires you to have Internet Explorer 5 or above. "If you want Bloggar in your language, please contact me so you can have the Localizer tool to help me with translating Bloggar! Should there be a corporate Death Penalty?. Should there be such a thing as a corporate death penalty? Historically corporations that commit massive fraud have been fined, sometimes enough to cause bankruptcy. Bankruptcy however can allow for a corporation to continue its existence and restore itself to solvency just as a person can do so. Actual prison time for massive white collar crimes is rare. To make my case I point to that most dishonest and fraudulent of companies, Arthur Andersen. More corrupt than Enron, they allowed Enron's fraud to gain legitimacy knowing full and well that the company was cooking the books. By allowing Enron's massive multibillion dollar fraud to gain legitimacy, they have caused significant financial disaster to investors, employees, and retirement funds. [kuro5hin.org]

Spell checking your e-mails. Quite honestly, there's no excuse for spelling errors anymore. Typos were frequent in the days of the typewriter; misspellings were common in the handwritten letter era. Though, there's virtually no quick way to spell check a word when you're in anything other than a "Microsoft Office Spell Checker" supported application. Lockergnomie Tom Maenner had issues with the feature in Outlook Express after he upgraded to Windows XP. "I had to locate 'csapi3t1.dl_' on the Windows XP CD and expand it as 'csapi3t1.dll' in this directory: C:\ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ Proof. Worked like a charm." I'm not certain if this will work on every machine, but it's worth trying if the tool isn't operational for you. If you dork up words every other minute, consider turning on the "Spell Check before Sending" feature in your default e-mail client. It's and its, than and then, their and they're, or any other homophone may slip through the cracks. Butt at least you won't look like a total fool - just a parshal one. Even online, credibility counts. [Lockergnome Windows Daily]

Bart's way to create bootable CD-ROMs. "A bootable CD-ROM is a CD from which you boot the PC. You (the technical guy) can create and prepare the structure for bootable installation, diagnostics or other CDs. Anybody in your company (without any knowledge about CD burning) can create and maintain these CDs by adding or changing files when needed. He just has to start a batch file and select "Build and Burn" to create a CD. This page is for you if you want to: create bootable CD-ROMs on a regular basis; build and burn fully automatic (optional blank CDRW before burn); use only freeware software to create your CDs; create a bootable CD-ROM with multiple boot images; create a DOS bootable CD-ROM using a hardware independent CD-ROM driver (for SCSI and ATAPI). This page is not for you if: you want to create just one simple bootable CD-ROM. You should use Cdrwin, Nero, or any other well-known application to create CDs."

Renaming with the desktop toolbar. When I sit down to sort through content for upcoming issues, I often use my desktop as a temporary staging area. Before too long, I have 50+ icons arranged in an area (having a resolution of 1600x1200 helps). Outlook messages, Internet shortcuts, text files - all mixed together. Yesterday, I hit a problem. I wanted to drag and drop an Outlook message from the mail client onto the desktop, but it had the same file name as something already sitting there. Oops. I canceled the copy. Instead of manually sorting through all of those desktop objects to rename just one, I used my desktop toolbar (add it to your taskbar by right-clicking an open area, selecting Toolbars | Desktop. Now, push it to one side of your taskbar. Click the double-arrows, right-click on a listed object, select the "Sort by Name" option, locate the file in question, right-click it, then select "Rename." Likewise, I could have placed all of those items into a separate folder and sorted them by a different parameter. But I didn't want to do that; the desktop toolbar was already there.
