The Pledge (2001)

Review on IMDB >>> "Sean Penn proves himself a first-rate director who gets moving, deep performances out of all his actors. And what a supporting cast - in addition to Nicholson (at his most subtle, something he doesn't always do), there's Harry Dean Stanton, Benecio Del Toro, Tom Noonan, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Wright Penn, the list goes on and on with the best charactor actors around. Del Toro does something completely different once again. The story is very moving and almost at the level of a Greek tragedy. Beautifully shot and edited with good use of score. The best drama I've seen in quite a while." <<<

Like one reviewer on Amazon commented: Who would have guessed the pot-smoking Spicoli of Fast Times fame would turn out such an incredibly deep and intellectual film 20 years later.

I couldn't really add much too these except that I too thought the cinematography was incredible and the characters were very deep.  And... unless you can allow yourself the intellectual space and freedom to fully absorb the subtleties at play here and potentially cross that thin line between sanity and madness as does Jack Nicholson's character, you will no doubt feel disappointed by this movie.

I distill this film's center down to empathy and the ability of the humans to cope (or not) with that 'gift' of conciousness.

Clem Snide - Moment in The Sun

Just discovered this 10 year old "adult-alternative" band with a handful of albums inlcuding the song "Moment in the Sun" off their CD The Ghost of Fashion.  Written "sarcastically for Jewel" according to Mp3.com  This number has a bit of everything: a bit of trumpet, organ and of course the fuzzy warm sounds of a guitar.

If you like Cake or even Dave Matthews you'll appreciate the 'alt-country' sound with a hint of blues in this band's music.  Audio Galaxy recommends Palace, Nick Drake, and Elliot Smith if you like 'Snide - I don't recognize any of the names, but I intend to give 'em a listen as well.

Cool! - I could see getting some mileage out of this.
