Hmmm.... I'd say more like Kid Rock or the Beastie Boys, but then most of the sublime that I'm familiar with is very melodic(?) - What I Got, Wrong Way, Santeria, and Doin' Time.

Tape (2001)

"This is a very daring and extremely unconventional film which will have a hard time finding an audience. Certainly, it will not be for everyone."

We watched this brilliant piece of camera work last night. The UMF - (ultimate mind %&#)

IMDB's write up says it all:

"...the viewer feels like a voyeur intruding on something that has nothing to do with them - the way Amy herself probably feels when watching these two men. And the camera is constantly drawing attention to itself to the point where it's actually distracting and even infuriating. If the sight of people talking in previous Linklater films felt inviting, this feels more like an uncomfortable situation you can't get out of."

I'm confident that watching this on a big screen would have amplified that feeling even more.

Beth Orton : Daybreaker

"Long known for her work with The Chemical Brothers and her two solo albums, Beth Orton is back with the brand new record entitled Daybreaker, her first on Astralwerks with Heavenly Recordings. Featuring collaborations with Ben Watt, The Chemical Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams (who lends vocals on the first single, Concrete Sky), Daybreaker will permanently establish Beth as one of the great artists of our time. "

I was curious who that was on Concrete Sky "sound" . Excellent first impression. I'll need more for sure.

Musical morning

Lot's of good music on DirecTV 818 (Progressive) this morning getting ready for work...

'Southern Cross' by Crosby Stills Nash & Young
In the Sun by Joseph Arthur

When Doves Cry by Patti Smith

Good eclectic mix!

That's reminds me... this past weekend listening to our local PR station... my daughter making up her own nonsense words as I croon out the real words to an instrumental 'Ohio' performed some accoustic guitarist.

A timeless moment on so many different levels. I'm smiling inside now at the thought of her recalling the moment 20 or 30 years from now :)

Don Henley (from Eagles still test the limits)

I have a great deal of distaste and disrespect for what MTV and VH1 have become, pandering to the lowest-common denominator -- you know, contributing to the increasing shallowness of the culture, the dumbing down of the culture, simply to feed the voracious corporate appetite. Corporations are ruining the world, okay? They're sucking the blood out of every culture on the earth.

NPR : Guitarist/Songwriter John Mayer

"The 24-year-old guitarist delivers a smoother, more smoldering sound than your average rocker -- in fact, you could say his music is for squares."

I'm a square then... If you haven't given this young gentleman a listen to yet then *DO* it. I've love that 'smooth, soldering sound' as described in the NPR interview linked above. The tension in Mayer's music is just incredible.

I first heard Why Georgia about a month ago on DirecTV's DMX 'Progressive' channel (an excellent source for new music BTW) and No Such Thing on our local Clear Channel station over the weekend. Hopefully, this 24 year old's emminent success won't spoil him too much. Lot's of clips and a couple of videos (for those w/ large pipes) on the official website johnmayer.com

Custom RSS Feeds From Emergent Music

If you find our current Radio Userland driven feed not flexible enough for your hardcore RSS needs then please check out our new dynamic RSS feeds (we're using RSS 0.92).

We know have the following feeds:

Top recommendations

Last changed

By fan

And you can limit how many items you want in each in addition to filtering by genre.

Send your complaints my way if you have any.

Hopefully this helps Benny who was trying to read our RSS feeds with his iPod. [Matt Goyer - Check out EM]

I can't tell you how exciting it is to be part of something as forward thinking as Emergent Music is. These guys are extremely responsive to the community they serve. Keep up the awesome work guys.

Sidenote: Now that I'm connected via broadband, I'll hopefully be able to participate and make more of a contribution to the EM community. It was kind of tuff having to wait on downloads at sub 28.8k speeds.

A first today... I ripped a CD onto my hard drive and threw away the physical disk. I couldn't find the case for it, and a caseless CD just seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. It's the first time I've ended up with purchased music only in the form of bits on my hard drive. On the other hand, the record company's position is probably that I own the CD, not the music itself, so I shouldn't have done what I did. Tough. It's a new world, you folks who work at the labels; you'd better get used to it and help make it even better for people like me, or we'll replace you. [Gary Robinson's Rants]

"But Cobain's music and lyrics confronted and changed me. They forced me to see a world I had previously avoided, mainly because my friends and I never walked that direction. Cobain was the first writer from my own age group to capture my attention."

I can relate on so many levels with the author of this article on Salon about the late Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's success in the early '90s.

RSS Downloads without Radio

>>> I've run across a couple more bugs in Radio Userland's code for enclosures. It chokes if the URL for the enclosure has spaces in it -- which is true for a lot of mp3 files. On Mac OS X (and I assume Mac OS 9 although I hanven't checked) it also chokes on filenames longer than 31 characters. In the meantime we're working on our own alternative RSS download engine so that interested users can get the best of Emergent Music downloaded onto their hard drives overnight without buying Radio. <<< [Gary Robinson's Rants]

It's great to see these guys putting forth the effort to make RSS delivered downloads ready for the massess. Good luck Gary & all at "em weblog"

The badge on the right is, IMHO, very cool. Run your mouse over it and click on an mp3 link to hear music. If you'd like to give your readers the ability to instantaneously hear the best of EM without leaving your own site, see these instructions. [Gary Robinson's Rants]

Got it! And it is truly cool (Although it would be even cooler limited to my micro-genres of choice). Scroll down, and hover your mouse on the EMp3 Badge
