Bundle:XML and expat on Mac OS X
I'm trying to install Bundle::XML on my Mac OS X machine. That's a Perl module, by the way. Turns out there's some tricky stuff to it. First, Mac OS X doesn't have expat installed. That is, the expat libraries in /usr/local/include (or wherever they may go) that stuff links to when building. XML::Parser.pm, which is something Bundle::XML needs, depends on expat. But expat itself doesn't build correctly out of the box on Mac OS X because it wants to build as a static library and Apple discourages static libraries on Mac OS X. And even when you get expat built, there's tricky stuff with XML::Parser.pm on OS X as well. David Wheeler explains the tricks and thanks to him I got everthing built. Well, I think I did. I haven't actually tested it yet.

traveling
On several occasions over the past several months I have claimed that we were planning a trip. The problem is that every time it was to somplace different. I have variously claimed that we were going to drive across the US (Roadtrip USA), drive to Sedona, and even fly to Japan. We haven't taken any of those trips. And it's likely we won't in the near future. But now we have a new plan. A trip to Toronto. We'd fly, of course. And once there we could tool around Toronto and even take a detour to Niagra Falls, which is less than 100 miles away. I wonder if we'll make this trip?

no computer experiment
I use the computer too much at home. I'd like to blame the Airport. It allows me to access the Internet from anywhere. Even the bathroom :) So I'm basically "always on". I think my wife is bored to tears by it. She has her own computer and she spends a good deal of time on-line as well. Maybe as much as me. But I think that may be because there's nothing else to do. I'm on the computer so she gets on the computer as well. We sit side-by-side, each on our separate computers. But there is one difference. I can't concentrate on anything while I'm computing. If my wife asks me a question I try to answer, but my brain is really off somewhere else. My wife doesn't have that problem. She can break her concentration on a dime, so to speak. And then go right back to what she's doing.
So tonight I'm going to try an experiment. No computer. I've got stuff I want to do on the computer, but, then, I've always got stuff I want to do on the computer. It can wait. I might even get to bed at a descent time for a change.
