Cad é sin don té sin nach mbaineann sin dó?

Last November, I found I could no longer access the Userland.com web site. Also, other factors that depend on the Userland, such as comments and the orange envelope for secure e-mail stopped working (on this and other blogs). The comment thing just showed empty brackets: []. Also couldn't update Radio root.

For a while I though the company had gone belly-up or was experiencing severe difficulties. However, I found I could connect through an alternative ISP, so the fault clearly lay with my broadband supplier, Telefonica. Using an external proxy also gives me access. A quick poll on a Spanish mailing list got 20 responses: 5 could connect, 15 coud not, and they were all Telefonica users.

Anyway, I contacted Telefonica's help line and they claim that Userland, or its ISP, is blocking access from certain IPs. It should be pointed out that Telefonica in Spain has set up a transparent proxy-cache. All web traffic in and out of Telefonica's network passes through a range of machines which cache everything (very useful for keeping tabs on where people are surfing); they also present their IP instead of yours, which is where the problem arises.

Telefonica say they are contacting Userland or its IP (they couldn't tell me which) to get them to unblock the IP range currently being denied access.

I hope they fix it soon.
