Yesterday I was with Ben and Mathias in Issaquah, because Ben's car wasn't ready at the Ford dealer, and he needed a ride to my place till Tim could give him a ride. We decided to ride around a bit and check out some stuff. Mathias drove us up this insane road that climbs Tiger Mountain I believe it's SE 54th Street (at least at the start) See this map to understand. He is looking forward to biking it. It's a pretty cool set of roads, lots of turns and trees, with occational views of Lake Samammish. We also went by my house. I endured the "middle of nowhere", and "are we there yet" taunts. For my personal notes, there is a fire hydrant across the street at the corner from my house. This is like 40 yards IIRC.

Bug hunter reports flaw in Excel. Security expert Georgi Guninski goes public with an alert on the use of XML style sheets with Microsoft's Excel XP software. The software giant is none too pleased with the word. [CNET News.com]

I really have to wonder what Guninski thinks he gains when he releases a vuln the day after he reports it.

Talk about lack of PR spin; passport changes to expose things you didn't have control over before, and by default make it opt-out on new passport creation, then sends out a notice to users who didn't have this choice when they signed on that this is now configurable. The result is that people think they are going to get more SPAM, and microsoft is even more evil. *sigh*

How Enron Got California to Buy Power It Didn't Need

Bush's California Energy Stance Faulted. Two prominent Californians accused the Bush administration of failing to heed their suspicions that more than just market forces were to blame for the state's electricity crisis last year. By Don Van Natta Jr.. [New York Times: Politics]

"And they [Enron] had major access to this administration," she [Senator Feinstein] added. "But the senior senator from California can't get in to see them."

MS' MIT prof witness gets toasted over KDE, GNOME. Drenched in GUI stuff... [The Register]

It's pretty easy to see what the point that the professor is trying to make. There are commonly used shells in linux world that depend on an html renderer. Remove the renderer and the shell doesn't work. However there exists more then one shell. This is also true in windows. You can change your shell to progman, or a single command prompt window, but this still won't help those apps that you have broken because you removed the dependant components from the system. This is such a simple concept that I don't understand why the laywers are still fighting about it. Linux is not linux without that kernel with it's apis. Windows is not windows without it's apis. When you name a platform entity, you are implying some common things that dependant app can expect, remove thoose things and you don't have that entity anymore.

XP Updates Start to P.O. Users [Wired]

Patch management on the server side still isn't as good as it needs to be. Patchs needs to hit the client update site faster. Right now the QFE process is sounding like a squeeky wheel in need of some grease.
