An e-mail making the rounds this morning "explains" how Enron and its accountants got into all this trouble:

Turns out that it was all just a case of bad cellular: Kenny Lay was on his cell phone when he said, "ship the Enron documents to the feds," but his associate heard, "rip the Enron documents to shreds."

This week has been a killer.  I've been working with some really nice software, but it's been a real bitch to get it all running.  It's a very complex suite of content management software that I've written some demos for.  It's great stuff, but it's very difficult to get running properly.  It was never designed to run on a single machine, much less a non-networked laptop (it has to be on a laptop so my boss can take the demo around and show it to people).

A week ago Wednesday I started on the install.  I got to the very last step and it crashed, wrecking the whole system.  I had to start from scratch three more times before it was ready to go.  That was at 1:30 AM last Friday.

It's a painful, 5-hour install process.  At one point, there's a service pack whose installation instructions actually say, "Open your Windows registry in your favorite registry editing program."  This is entirely unacceptable.

The deadline for the demos was this weekend, so I turned in some really hard work Monday and Tuesday, finally finishing up the demos at 11:30 PM on Tuesday (I was able to leverage a lot of code from some other demos I'd written).

So the demo was written.  It all worked.  Everything was great, and I was early.  Then I unplugged the laptop from the docking station, and it stopped working.  I called the vendor, and they had some ideas that seemed to fix the problem initially, but in the final analysis it didn't work.  I've reinstalled, reconfigured, tweaked, pulled, and pushed network settings, drive settings, hardware settings like you wouldn't believe.  Nothing worked.

I kept trying things right up until 6 last night.  Nothing worked.  It was a 60 hour week, over 5 days, and in the end none of that work is going to be used.

Next week, I plan to slack a bit.
