About Dave & Ztuff
My name is Dave Ely and I live in Thousand Oaks, California with my wife and three children. When I last contemplated moving, my family told me they would miss me, so I guess we're not going anywhere anytime soon.
I work in the system software development group at EarthLink, where I've been since back when we were a tiny company. These days I am doing a lot of work in Java, but if given my choice I'd prefer to be working in C++. I really miss RTTI; the reflection nonsense required by Java makes me feel like I'm wearing gloves. I also miss being able to use templates and having complete control in a way that's not quite possible in Java. Oh well, so be it.
In my spare time I am doing a lot of dinking around with MacOS X (which I usually write as OsX and pronounce as Oz). I've been using a Mac full time since the late eighties (I think sometime in early 1989) and I'm just not interested in moving elsewhere. I've tried a couple times, but it was pretty dismal. Strangely, I've never had a really bad reaction to unix, because I didn't expect much from it in terms of usability (I used it for a long time before I ever did anything not related to the command line).
I'm interested in a great many things, not all of which are technology related.
I started this weblog to create a more public place to stick all the stuff I've been doing for myself for many years. I liked how it was going, so I've kept at it. I called it Ztuff because the topic wanders, it's just what seems important to me at the moment.
For lack of somewhere else to put it, here is a service I have sitting around. I really need to wrap a couple of useful services with the appropriate Radio glue, but this makes a good marker for now:
