A Legalised Gerrymander
Danny Morrison

So, Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern will return in early April with, apparently, a "take it or leave it" plan, based on amendments to the 28-page document they presented to the parties in Hillsborough last week. They have justified the postponement of the Assembly elections by a month (May 29th) because of the inconclusive nature of the negotiations aimed at restoring the Assembly and the power-sharing executive. In one fell swoop they have linked the holding of elections, separate and important in their own right, to a deal being struck that favours the elective prospects of David Trimble's party. Were the elections to have taken place on May 1st without a deal (or perhaps even with a deal) the predictions were that the Ulster Unionists would have suffered at the hands of the DUP due to unionist disillusionment with the Belfast Agreement. That would be ironic, given that it is the Ulster Unionists, under the eccentric leadership of David Trimble, who have set the pace and concentrated attention on the IRA. O'Reilly victim of political vendetta
Des Dalton

Republican Sinn Féin Assistant PRO Des Dalton said that both Mick O'Reilly and Eugene McGlone were victims of a "political vendetta", he was reacting to the news that the appeals by ATGWU General Secretary, Mick O'Reilly and his Deputy, Eugene McGlone have been rejected by the three person Union panel, based in London, appointed to hear the men's appeal. Non-Constitutional Law Vis-¿-Vis The Northern Ireland Question
Paul A. Fitzsimmons

It is entirely possible to construct a wall by starting with a course of bricks laid directly upon earthen ground. Millennia of accumulated knowledge and experience tell us, however, that soils often settle and shift over time and that, as a result, such walls will tend to buckle, crack, and crumble, all regardless of masons' skill or mortar's strength. Hence the near universal use of more solid foundations in the construction of buildings. [The Blanket: Non-Constitutional Law Vis-À-Vis The Northern Ireland Question]

Hillsborough talks adjourned and election delayed
Laura Friel

The media had been full of it. David Trimble no longer flanked by UUP dissidents, republican veteran Joe Cahill quietly arriving, Gerry and Martin engrossed in conversation, Bertie Ahern and Tony Blair sharing a joke. All the speculation was built around a few pertinent photographs and too many idle hours for journalists standing outside in the bitter winds of a northern spring. Work in progress

After 48 hours of intense negotiations at Hillsborough, Sinn Féin has succeeded in making substantial progress on all of the issues on which it has been pressing the British government, but the message from the republican leadership was that much remains to be thrashed out. [AP/RN: Work in progress
