What's Next Conference in Brattleboro, Vermont
I'll be giving a couple of talks at the What's Next Conference in Brattleboro, Vermont. One is on web services, the other on application server futures. The date is June 13.
The keynote speaker is Alan Cooper, who designed Visual Basic and wrote The Inmates are Running the Asylum. I've never met Alan, and I'm looking forward to it. His thesis, which is that propellerheads consistently fail to understand basic user needs, looms larger for me all the time.
For example, in response to my item about Xanadu and the success of the web, Ed Nixon wrote to remind me that the hypertext writing skills that seem so easy and natural to me are still, for many people, obscure and difficult. He is surely right. Radio does a great job making the stuff accessible, but we have a long way to go before everyone will be a fluid producer (as well as consumer) of hypertext.

Netscape Enterprise Server replaced on netscape.com
The always-fascinating monthly Netcraft survey is out. Writes Mike Prettejohn:
Remarkably, this month Netscape-Enterprise has been replaced on netscape.com . Although Sun and AOL have dissolved their iPlanet joint venture, and netscape.com is wholly owned by AOL, the move still seems likely to create useful marketing collateral for Microsoft, and indeed, Covalent and Red Hat too, as they sell to enterprises where Sun/Netscape is the present incumbent. Looking more carefully, Netscape-Enterprise had already been replaced on some of Netscape's European sites. For example, netscape.co.uk now runs Apache, while in France netscape.fr runs Microsoft-IIS. It may prove challenging for Sun to convince people that they should not migrate away from Netscape-Enterprise when the Netscape sites themselves have done precisely this.
Mike, you are a master of understatement!
Incidentally, Netcraft's records for radio.weblogs.com show that the transition has been made to Apache on Windows 2000. It will be interesting to watch the uptime moving average. In any case, it appears these transient errors are a consequence of the switch:
