Pope 'may quit' if health worsens. "Pope John Paul II does not rule out resigning if his health continues to deteriorate, a cardinal tells journalists in Rome." [BBC News: world]
One of the great men of the 20th century in my opinion. He was talking about a Europe that ran from the Urals to the Atlantic long before the collapse of the Soviet Union. One thing that a 2000 year unbroken Apolostolic succession gives you is a sense of perspective.

Just booked the Pizza Express Jazz club for Friday night. Viktoria Tolstoy is playing. (Guy Barker was sold out at Ronnie Scott's).
" VIKTORIA TOLSTOY Viktoria Tolstoy is one of Sweden’s best loved young jazz singers. She made her breakthrough at the age of nineteen with her album ‘Smile, Love and Spice’, and in 1997 became the first Swedish artist to record for the renowned Blue Note label. Her later CD ‘White Russian’, produced by Esbjörn Svensson, has been highly acclaimed in Sweden and by audiences worldwide. She has toured extensively overseas and performed with top artists including the legendary McCoy Tyner. Now, at the Club, she launches her latest CD ‘Blame It On My Youth’ (EMI/Kaza). With Jacob Karlzon (piano), Mattias Svensson (double bass) and Peter Danemo (drums). (And yes she is related to the celebrated Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. He was her great-great grandfather, from her mother's side.) "

"Imagine if a bunch of Jewish soldiers, in a tense street-battle, had used a mosque as a sanctuary. Now, imagine that they had boozed it up, wrecked the joint, and left to enjoy a safe international exile. Do you think we would have heard the last of it?" Andrew Sullivan linking to an article on what went on in the Church of the Nativity.

"AT first, as I read this magisterially detailed history of the world's largest manufacturer of lifts, I thought it might merely be the most boring book ever written. As time went on, I realised it threatens to set an extraordinary new benchmark in the history of deadpan; something on a scale of which the brothers Grossmith could barely have begun to dream. Gosh, this book is boring. It doesn't bore by accident: it bores with conviction. It bores with the stary-eyed monotonous fanaticism of somebody truly devoted to a subject about which no one in their right mind could give a hoot.".........[more]

Reuters. You gotta love this guy. Here is a farmer that is growing his own crops on his own land. Genetically modified genetic material from other farms infected his crops via multiple vectors. Monsanto sued him for patent infringement. The company won, and he has mortgaged his farm to appeal. More corporate misbehavior. Sure, based on my earlier posting about corporate profits and productivity, companies are under the gun to make money. This is not how to do it. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]
