Jake Savin discovers the joy of using Mozilla Firebird. "I'm writing in my browser, and loving it all over again. Writing this post feels a lot like writing in Manila for the first time, and that feels really good."

Raccoon I found a raccoon in our swimming pool this morning. My kids bought one of those inflatable pools from Intex earlier this year. It's 30 inches deep with an inflated vinyl tube around the top. The raccoon must have jumped from a nearby fence into the pool, then found himself unable to gain any kind of hold on the vinyl tubing. He looked liked he had been swimming for quite a long time. I grabbed a few pieces of lumber from the garage and placed them in the pool, thinking the raccoon could get enough traction on the wood to drag itself out of the pool. I guess it had been treading water even longer than I thought; it was too weak to do anything more than grab on to the wood. In the end I had to pull the 'coon out myself (I pulled the lumber out of the pool while it held on tightly). The raccoon crawled back up the same fence it probably jumped from, then just sat on top of the fence. Two hours later it fell into the neighbor's yard. I suppose it will be dead by tonight.
