Department of Bureaucratic Security

Glenn Reynolds
If the White House had asked for billions of dollars to analyze intelligence data, it would be onto something. But the Department of Homeland Security isn't really about analysis. The FBI and CIA — who have traditionally had trouble cooperating — will be outside the new department, which probably will simply constitute another entity with which those agencies will have trouble cooperating.

Did This Man Just Rewrite Science?

Dennis Overbye
"A New Kind of Science" may be the scientific publishing event of the season, but whether it is a revolution in science as well must await the judgment of Dr. Wolfram's peers. So far, some seem amazed by his courage, others by his chutzpah.

Every great software product deserves great documentation. If this isn't it, it won't be for lack of effort...

How to create a directory in Radio's Outliner

Jake Savin
Directories are a hierarchy of web pages that link to other directory pages, and finally to websites. Our directories are designed to work like the leading Web directories, Yahoo, DMOZ and Looksmart, with one important difference — we all get to create our own directories and link them together. Think of these directories as hierarchic and dynamic webrings. Ways of linking together expertise, where ever you might find it, and a tool that makes it easy to create all kinds of structures.

What is a News Aggregator?

Dave Winer
A news aggregator is "software that periodically reads a set of news sources, in one of several XML-based formats, finds the new bits, and displays them in reverse-chronological order on a single page."

Posting has been nonexistent for the last two weeks because of a 1.2-lb addition to our household (no, not a prematurely born baby...).

"Hood" is a 6-week old female kitten that we found hiding inside the engine compartment of our car — after driving to Arlington Center for our standard Saturday morning rituals. We're not sure where she came from, but after meowing loudly for 24-hours (looking for mommy?), she seems to have adapted well, and is now splitting her time between purring in my lap and tearing around the house in search of things to pounce on.

One thing I still haven't gotten the hang of is, how do I write with a kitten waiting to "correct" my typing?
