Is TV a medium of communication? It is not. TV is an enterprise. TV likes to call itself a medium, suggesting that it is a neutral carrier of messages. This lie is designed to anneal TV's contradictions. Why lie? It is not that the enterprise is necessarily nefarious, but that its contradictions are disturbing to contemplate.
TV's apologists refer to it as a medium; its so-called «critics» refer to it as a medium, too. It's a «received idea»—an unquestioned assumption. Like many received ideas, it's not only incorrect, it confuses discussion and vitiates criticism.
