Glossary

BCE
Before the Common Era. The Common Era begins with the year One. This nomenclature has replaced B. C. (Before Christ), and A. D. (Anno Domini 'in the year of Our Lord')
DCMA
Digital Millenium Copyright Act is a United States law, which protects the rich at the expense of the middle class, and the poor.
Modernism
If architecture is 'frozen music' then Modernism is 'chilled totalitarianism' — an æsthetic of elitism and contempt for human scale, but drained of the embarrassing enthusiasms and tiresome emotions of its ideological parents, Fascism and Stalinism. The ghastly International Style of architecture is the most complete expression of Modernism.
PoMo
Post Modernism. A kind of 'middle-brow' / 'midcult' persiflage of high culture, complete with arcana, argot, lugubrious decorum, euphemism, and a very bourgeois obsession with taxonomy, replete with sublimated class resentments. PoMos are the heirs of those who, in the 1930s-1940s, embraced Stalinism ("I have seen the future and it works!") and who liked to speak of "the masses" while enjoying cushy white-collar jobs. The academic equivalent of knitted toilet-roll covers.
