AC went belly-up a couple of days ago. Or, as best we could tell, the thermostat stopped doing anything. Went to Home Depot early this afternoon to replace the decades-old mercury thermostat with a lookalike upgrade. Pretty straightforward replacement. Wires were color-coded and everything for me. Unfortunately, the display on the thermostat doesn't even light up. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

No other power problems in the house. Checked every fuse, tripped every breaker. I'd just as soon not call an electrician in to say either a) "your foozitz was loose. $100, please," or b) "your AC is dead. $1,000 for a new one." I've got a few more options to exhaust.

Next step is to locate the transformer to make sure we're not losing that 24v current somewhere.

Just brought the kids into the bookstore so they could participate in story time. They quickly lost interest and began exploring. Somehow I ended up with two new books that had been on my "buy sometime" list for a number of years: Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson, and Redwall (with color illustrations) by Brian Jacques.
