Good perspective on the many recent corporate bookkeeping scandals from Martin Crutsinger of the Associated Press. Slap yourself in the forehead kind of stuff.

They key is to understand that moving bits doesn't translate to knowledge: data becomes information becomes knowledge becomes wisdom. The article IT: New profits in Old Glory? points out how important knowledge management is, but frames it in the appropriate context:

Whether out of heartfelt patriotism in the wake of Sept. 11 or the desire to tap into the nearly $38 billion budgeted for homeland security spending in 2003, many information technology companies that previously paid little attention to government contracts are now going to great lengths to attract government business.

Opportunity knocks pretty loudly at 38 billion.
