Reagan's Second Coming. From Bill Keller's must-read piece in the NYTimes Magazine, Reagan's Son:
Bush ...stands a good chance of advancing a radical agenda that Reagan himself could only carry so far.
Yesterday, the NY Times reported that the Bush administration has deemed the new reading program selected by NYC as lacking enough phonics and may deny the City millions in federal aid. The NYC Dept of Ed.'s response is that they did not want a rigid approach to teaching phonics. Bush's reading advisor says the proposed program "lacks proof that it works" So much for Republicans wanting to abolish the Dept. of Ed. Now it's another weapon in their war on public education. In some reversed reflection way, this from Jenny reminds me of Karen's and my phrasing of two adages this week at mlk. The first describes bureaurcracy, our school district's in particular. The second describes a collaborative blog we use for planning:

  1. Bureaucracies are alwyas more committed to looking good than to doing anything.
  2. useTheBlog,Ed! A website where we do good, no matter what it looks like.

"Whatever We Can Do Is Doable!".

Kate and I have a new mantra, which may be the title of our book someday. It applies specifically to the SLS Union List of Serials (not the one behind that link, but the cool new one we're working on), however we're going to apply it to every work project from now on.

The ref to State Library here is bad enough, but note too the mention of elections. Now that's an area where Florida really needs to cutting funding : Bush: Agency merger would save millions. "Gov.
