The Playboy Jazz Festival Weblog Stretches Out and Powers Up for 2003

The action for the 25th Playboy Jazz Festival will get under way this Thursday, February 27, 2003 with the announcement of performers and other related events at a press conference at The Playboy Mansion. The New Jazz Thing will be there to provide pictures and details to begin preparations for coverage of this 25th anniversary celebration, Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, 2003 at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. To get us all in the mood, here are some pictures from the 2002 press conference. It looks like I will be solo at the press conference this year, Ron Dhanifu of Jazz 88 has other commitments...it will not be the same. Last year was our first at this announcement event. It was a good time to meet some of the artists and get the scoop on what the festival is going to look like. There are a number of events around the L.A. area leading up to the big weekend, so these get announced also. We'll be sprucing up the Playboy Jazz Festival Weblog this week to get it ready also. There are pictures from last year's festival that we will be putting up (here's some 2001 photos). We get lots of folks coming to the site via Google, with a Playboy Jazz Festival search linking to the weblog (2) and the 2001 pictures (4) in the top 5 results. We'll post the line-ups for the big weekend shows right on the weblog home page and we'll link to full picture coverage via Webshots.

Nnenna Freelon flew like a bird of paradise, debuting tunes from her new album "Tales of Wonder: Celebrating Stevie Wonder" at the 24th Playboy Jazz Festival, June 15, 2002.

He was previewing and doctoring shots when I barged in to ask him some questions about his setup (picture taking and editing on site, but no real-time upload for publication). He was nice enough to email me this shot and it was in my Inbox this morning. Thanks Leroy! I have a feeling the picture quality on this site will be going downward quickly after this one. Raising the bar!

Pre-Fest Preparations Complete

Just putting on the finishing touches before getting a couple Z's and then... Road Trip To The Bowl For The Fest! Preparations include beers and other assorted refreshments for the lug up the hill with the rest of the party people. Getting the digicam all ready with fresh rechargeables and clean disks to capture the day on...mostly pics, but maybe some video/audio (if the bunny gods allow). A fresh ID to pass on to new friends. And reporting to the blog as much as the party allows!!

"A stroll around the grounds of the Bowl during one of the festivals provides an illuminating view of the sociology of the event. Up in the nosebleed section, the walkway that runs above the top level of seats is always filled. Picnic baskets, coolers, folding chairs, even large beach umbrellas line the upper side of the path. Strangers laugh and drink together as the music reverberates from the stage below. Directly in front of that stage, in the high-priced boxes, somewhat more refined partying takes place, often with linen-covered tables, crystal wine glasses and catered meals."
Our crew spends the festival gravitating between both worlds! Literally (but I refused to give up Jeff F.'s festival seating secrets). Here's another way to find us...

Marsalis Adds Pizzazz to Playboy Jazz Festival - "Most interestingly, saxophonist Joe Lovano will appear with Gil Goldstein in "A Salute to Caruso" based on his new Blue Note recording of works associated with the opera tenor." I'll be seeing Saturday this year, as usual, so this is one I'm looking forward to.
