Web Pages That Suck -- Examples of Bad Web Design
These are the Daily Suckers -- Examples of Bad Web Design -- from WebPagesThatSuck.com. I couldn't predict every new sucky design technique that would come along when I wrote the book because there's always a new way to do something bad. This page will keep you up-to-date. Live examples.

Web Pages That Suck
Daily Sucker for May 10, 2002

They keep getting bigger and uglier. This site weighs in at something like 300Kb -- besides being too big, it's hard to imagine what's causing the problem. Well, I looked and the rollovers are way too large -- and ugly, and you can't read them. You're supposed to make the buttons as wide as your longest text -- not squish the text to fit a given size.

The American Brick logo is something like 20Kb -- seriously. I also hate the Microsoft transitions used here. On the plus side, it appears there is some really good information about fireplaces under the FAQs button. Speaking of buttons, doesn't that logo button just suck? Williams Panel Brick.

MSN Chat Control Has Security Problem. Various Microsoft programs that have Chat Control, including MSN Messenger, can be used by a hacker to take control of a user's machine. A fix is already available, though. comment []

Addendum: He loves it.

Daily Sucker for May 9, 2002

Classic suck. Actually, I'd rather visit this site than some silly site where you have Mystery Meat Navigation, FlashSplash pages, etc. We've got some poor color choices -- just like the ones I made on my home page. The difference is, which too many of you didn't catch because you didn't read the FAQ <g>, is that I'm poking fun at the technique

We've got an ugly background and the Java menu. I don't know why they use a Java menu. Some text is centered on a page while other text is flush left. While they didn't crop their images so there's no white border, at least they made the images real thumbnails instead of just using large graphics and changing the HEIGHT= and WIDTH= parameters. Vincent Flanders'
Two-Minute Offense

Match Wits With the Wit
of Web Design Usability
and Develop Your Critical Eye

Here's your chance to hone your critical eye to recognize bad design. It's a Web Page usability study compressed into two minutes.

Here's what a Final Analysis Report Page looks like.

It's Shipping -- More Suck for the Buck!

buy the new bookHERE'S A BIG VERSION OF THE COVER

As you might imagine, "Son of Web Pages That Suck" isn't the title I would have given my new book due out this April 22. If I had my druthers I would have called it "Bastard Son of Web Pages That Suck." Unfortunately, the publisher has my druthers in his pocket so the book ended up with this title.

What's the new book like? You should read all about it. Well, you know me, it's just like you'd expect--it's not your typical, boring Web design book. It's like the original WPTS but it's bigger, better and badder. Order your advance copy of Son of Web Pages That Suck today.

News That Doesn't Suck

Check out the news stories I find interesting. Updated fairly frequently.

The Daily Sucker Backgrounder

The Daily Sucker contains material that should be considered updates to the book, "Web Pages That Suck." I can't see the future -- if I could, I'd be picking lottery numbers and stocks. The Daily Sucker features new sucky design techniques not in existence when the book was written. Since Web designers are stubborn, I also include old sucky techniques featured in the book. Maybe if they see a bad technique featured enough they'll stop using it.

The suckers are based on user input. You see a site that you think sucks and then e-mail the URL to me. No personal pages (personal pages are supposed to reflect the individual's personality, artistic freedom, and lack of taste -- a commercial site is about making money) or Web site designers (it would look like a conflict of interest) -- unless they use Mystery Meat Navigation (MMN). If I think there's some merit to your selection, I post it along with some commentary. If you know of a site that qualifies, let me know.

The sucky example will usually be available for only 24 hours (or thereabouts -- weekends and egregious examples are exceptions) -- never to be seen again. Well, probably. Somebody could always suggest them again -- and they do.
