Dave doesn't like Christmas. Me neither. It's too contrived, to expensive and, if done right, too stressful. Well, for me anyway. Some people seem to thrive on it. Like this guy:

D100 with 35mm f/2 @ f/4, 1/60th sec., iso 3200 and fill flash onboard the Polar Express!

Check out the gallery of Elinor Carucci.

I also really like the style of the gallery.

[Thanks to Jim T H for the pointer.]

It's a yellow, metallic, abstract blob.

Back yard update

N80 with 24-120vr on trix @ EI 640

More black and white film ...

The first two rolls of film, I had burnt with developer that was three times too concentrated, so there was not enough contrast in the image. The density of those images was so high, that the grain was amplified when the negatives were scanned. This time I got the developer right and proceded to give the Tri-X 400 film 5 minutes of HC110 at 70°F. The contrast is much better.

War news.

The war in Afghanastan continues without news. Bin Laden is still at large and muslim clerics debate the morality of a policy of religeous murder-suicide.

On the home front of Iraq, our soldiers fight on, so we can enjoy true democracy - you know, where the right guy wins. Hey - don't look at me, some grand Ayatollah said so.

Our President's secretary however, thinks our troops are soaking up too many resources. In a talk to the troops from a neighboring country (where he was pretty sure hed be safe) secretary Rumsfeld told a foot soldier that "you go to war with the Army you have." The soldier's expectation of frills like armor were out of line.

On a happier note, the President just got himself a new yacht. Well, we bought it for him as a coronation present. I'm sure he'll be opening the envelope with the keys during the shindig at the White House on January 20. It'll be the biggest presidential party evar!

New York Times science writer Dennis Overbye has an article about the history of String Theory in today's edition. It's very detailed, humorously done and assumes that you hae been keeping up for the last twenty years. Don't worry though if you haven't - you can read up in about twenty minutes.

(On a photographic note, notice that all three of the photos from the NYT have blackboards in them. Not glaring white boards like we get these days - real chalk blackboards.)

I had some thoughts on this new-fangled membrane cosmology in July of 1995. I left it in the arm waving stage because the math was beyond my simple mind. But you can get the idea, this seems to be describe the current string theory derived hypothesis for the structure of the universe. My thoughts at the time were heavily influenced by the writings (and moreso, the drawings) of Stanford's Andre Linde.
