Adam Curry is doing a feed he calls SyncPod to help developers adapt aggregators to work with enclosures. Scott Johnson says Feedster will have a special report listing all feeds that support enclosures. Now that I have more free time, I'm going to tweak up enclosure support in Radio. Picking out the gems.

Adding Waypath Referencing to My Weblog.

Summary: A chance to scan weblogs that also deal with the same topic? Useful, helpful, even to the writer who in some real sense discovers the subject after having completed the effort. But useful, certainly, to the reader who found the blog entry through, say, Google, and then has some Waypath located blogs to follow.

I wrote earlier about Waypath Radio plug-in, but didn't have time to install it. I did it today - check my homepage to see how it works (I'd like to play a bit more with styling, but this is for another time).

Waypath looks interesting. They claim to have over 8 million posts in their database which is a lot. It'll be interesting to see how this develops and how often they pick out the gems from among that lot :-)

Note: to publish any PowerPoint or Word doc to my Radio weblog, all I have to do is save the file as a Web page to Radio's WWW folder. In a couple seconds, the files are uploaded. I click on the link for the uploaded document in Radio's "events" page (on the main menu) and it takes me to the link I can use in my weblog. Simple. Given that the doc is both on my desktop and up at my site, I get an automatic back-up as part of the process. [John Robb's Weblog]

Rendering PHP Files with Radio UserLand. A Workbench visitor asks: How can I use Radio to render .php files instead of .html files when upstreaming?

The file extension is determined by the #renderedFileExtension directive. By default, files are rendered with the .html extension.

To set the extension to .php for an entire folder and its subfolders, edit the #prefs.txt file in that folder and add this line:

#renderedFileExtension "php"

Here's an example: the xmas.txt file and the xmas.php page it produces.

To set the extension only for a specific file, add the same line at the top of the file along with any other directives. Leave a blank line after the directives and before the content of the page, but don't put blank lines between each directive. [Workbench]

Speaking of backups, Radio also has a way to make sure you don't loose your weblog. Stop by http://127.0.0.1:5335/system/pages/prefs?page=2.16 and take a look. I keep the first box, "Check this box to have Radio back up new or changed data every night" checked and have the location set to a directory inside the afore-mentioned "My Documents" folder. That way I end up with a tree full of XML, always updated. If Radio were ever to completely die, another tool could read it a rebuild this entire site. [Steven's Notebook]

Creating an index of weblog posts in Radio. Inspired by Rob Henerey's suggestion, I've written a Radio script that displays an index of weblog posts for the main weblog or a category.

Andy Rhinehart is experimenting with an RSS feed of help wanted ads from the Spartanburg Herald. Very cool. It would be even better if there was an e-mail address attached to each job posting so people could respond. He is also using the multi-author tool in Radio to publish a weblog for the paper's news stories. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

More on Posting From Radio's Outliner. I did a little digging around, trying to find out what happens when I select Post to Weblog from the context menu in an outline. I found some interesting stuff. For one thing, I can extend the context menu myself. You can too. Just add menu entries to user.tools.menus.rightClickMenu. Any changes show up immediately! Hey, that's pretty cool because it means I can make adjustments to how stuff is posted into my weblog from an outline. More on this later.

I also found that the Post to Weblog menu item results in a call to radio.outliner.menuCommands.PostToWeblog. This is sort of a mini-renderer (see A Busy Writers Guide to Radio Renderers for background) that takes your outline, marks it up based on the structure of the outline, and throws the resulting HTML into the new post text box on your Radio home page. This default renderer charges through the selected node and subnodes. The selected node is marked up with bold tags. Any indented nodes underneath it are marked up as list items for an unordered list. More thoughts are forthcoming... [On The Mark]

Posting From the Outliner. I often see Dave Winer pointing to screenshots where he is editing his weblog using Radio's outliner. I love writing in the outliner and use it for all of my stories, but I am not real familiar with using it for writing posts. I know I can do simple things like write the text for a post and then right-click to select the Post to Weblog menu. But how about paragraphs, lists, and titles? I am experiementing today. All of today's posts are being written in the outliner. I will document my findings as the day proceeds. [On The Mark]

Sam Gentile asks, "Why do titles that have been set in Radio and inserted manually into the Item Template not show up on any category pages even if they use the same exact template?"

Categories each use their own copy of a theme's template files (including the item template). When you choose a theme for a category, Radio puts the theme's template files in that category's folder in www/categories.

To make your item template change apply to each category, create a new theme, then open each category from the home page and apply that theme to it. [Workbench]

Radio as Infrastructure.

Ernie's post the other day about how he'll be using Radio to update his firm's News page got me thinking about how flexible Radio really is. Here's how I use Radio today:

As a weblog application. Radio runs on my desktop and uploads new posts to my weblog TINS (just in case you hadn't figured it out, it's an acronym: There Is No Spoon, from a certain movie...).
As an aggregator. I monitor over 80 web sites - Radio downloads new content from them hourly and presents them in my aggregator page, saving me at least a half hour a day and making me aware of countless things that would otherwise never hit my radar.
As an outliner. I have become an outline junkie, using Radio's built-in outliner to organize many of my most critical job-related activities.
As a conduit from my Treo to our intranet. An outgrowth of my outlining habit is the need to have quick access to my outlines. I use Natara Bonsai as my Palm-based outliner, and wrote a quick hack to automatically export all Bonsai outlines from my Treo to a directory in Radio. Once in that directory, Radio automatically converts the outline to HTML and uploads it to our intranet - making my information immediately available to the rest of my company. (Note: the conversion to HTML is possible thanks to an outstanding plug-in for Radio called ActiveRenderer.)
As a promotional web site for my book. Along with my two co-authors, I manage a group weblog in support of our book about marketing on the Internet. Posts are aggregated by Radio and uploaded to bookblogs.com (a domain I own).
As a subject matter backup. I maintain a separate category in Radio for posts relating to Knowledge Management. These posts are then aggregated by David Gurteen in the UK, who maintains a "Knowledge-log" of various contributors on KM topics. (Apology in advance to David - I've been a bit slack in contributing lately. I'll get better, I promise.)

To sum up, Radio currently uploads content from my desktop to four unique web sites on three separate domains. Some content is automatically generated, some is converted and uploaded, other content is simply mirrored from my desktop up to the web. Radio has become a critical piece of my desktop.

Yahoogroups RSS

"It's a trivial hack but I created a web page that will help you create URLs for RSS feeds from Yahoo Groups mailing lists.

It's hosted over on the archive at: http://feeds.archive.org/misc/yahoogroups/

The RSS generation feature of Yahoo Groups requires that the list's archives be publicly readable. If the archives aren't publicly readable then you can't get RSS from them without some cookie juggling.

I keep about a dozen of these feeds subscribed in my aggregator. I came across several new lists recently and found it rather tedious to create RSS URLs for them. This greatly eases the process. Give it a try and, as always, feedback is appreciated." [Syndication News from Bill Kearney]

Mikel continues to push forward Radio's ability to serve as an easy to customize digital dashboard with his tool: myRadio Nuggets. With this tool you can make posts (or publish a stand-alone page using Radio's "stories" menu) that include stock quotes, weather data, ebay auction data, and Fedex tracking info (he promises that more is on the way). Like a lot of us, I am in the midst of moving this weblog to its own domain. I just wanted to provide a heads up. I need to get a few things out of the way first. I'll be using Matt Mower's excellent LiveTopics to convert several categories to topics. I'll also be switching to a more CSS-based theme. I will try to keep breakage to a minimum.

Have you seen Fetchserver.com.

Fetch delivers on the enterprise streaming side of klogging.

Server pulls SQL data from sources, on schedule, outputs RSS feeds.
Clients grab feeds, scroll news in a task bar UI.

Note the variable query frequency: pulled more often for rapidly changing data, presented more prominently for more important data.

Why isn't this database bridge part of Radio or Manila?

The extremely talented technology team at De Anza College has put together a wonderful support site for their faculty. Lots of great how-to's and training material for using Manila to create interactive faculty websites. Bravo! This is not only a template for how to effectively roll out weblogs to faculty members and students, it is also a template for doing this on corporate Intranets.

I underrepresented Dan Mitchell's role in making this happen at De Anza. His willingness to go the extra mile in helping his fellow faculty members get online is an example of what makes the world worth living in. Bravo! [John Robb's Radio Weblog]
