Here are some stuff on SMS, SMPP and Java..

SMS is quite popular in Europe but I don?t think people in the US are familiar with it. So if you are curious here is your answer to what is SMS and some details about where it can be useful.

Some technical details about the SMS format.

A short description of SMPP....

"The Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP) protocol is an open industry standard messaging protocol designed to simplify integration of data applications with wireless mobile networks such as GSM, TDMA, CDMA and PDC. The protocol is widely deployed in the mobile telecommunications industry. "

Here are the SMPP specs if you are interested about the technical details of SMPP

And here are finally some Java SMPP API's.

This is the one I'm using for my project. It is Logica's open source SMPP API. It comes with a SMSC server simulator and a test client application. Although the documentation is almost non existent it is very easy to use and very reliable, I personally recommend it to anyone who want's to start experimenting with SMPP.

Another one that seems to be popular is the SMPPAPI. This one is also open source. I haven?t used it personally but it should be ok.

And finally another two SMS Java API's not specific for SMPP. The SMSJDK and jSMS.
