A story about Martha Quinn
It probably wasn't long after the residuals for the skin cream commercials stopped coming in that Martha decided to do a speaking tour. UNH, which I was more or less attending at the time, was one of the stops. It was heavily advertised in the school newspaper and given prominent message board space in the Student Union, which is why it surprised everyone, especially Martha, when only one person came.
The response by the head of the UNH Activities Board was, naturally, to write a nasty letter to the paper berating us for not arriving in droves to see a washed-up, post-revival almost-celebrity. I do not know if the attendance changed the activities bureaucrat's strategy in guest selection, or if years later she's booking Darva Conger as a motivational speaker for her sales team.
My understanding was that Martha didn't give her talk. If I'd been that one sucker who paid $2 to get in, I would have demanded that she perform just for me. Dance, cowboy. Dance.
