Chinese Prosper in Canada, and Eagerly Read About It
The rise in the ethnic Chinese population has stimulated meteoric growth in the Chinese media and made them an influential player on the Canadian political landscape. [New York Times: International] 'Leaving the mainstream media out of the political dialogue is not unusual anymore in a city whose Chinese population has exploded from a tiny minority to 30 percent of all residents in just one generation. By making his pitch directly to the 40 percent of his district's voters who are ethnic Chinese, Mr. Chan was giving a nod to Vancouver's parallel worlds.
The Chinese population in Canada has doubled in the last two decades to 1.1 million, or more than 3 percent of all residents. But nowhere is its presence felt more than in this metropolitan area of 1.8 million, of which 342,665, or 19 percent, are ethnic Chinese, according to the 2001 census.'

As Europe Hunts for Terrorists, the Hunted Press Advantages
The investigation of the Madrid bombings shows how terrorists continue to exploit advantages against the agents tracking them. [New York Times: International] 'The unfolding Spanish investigation has shown that the terrorists continue to exploit a tactical advantage. The militants operate in an ever-changing constellation of cells, moving freely from country to country across the continent, guided by opportunity and fanaticism. The agents tracking them are constrained by jurisdictional and bureaucratic boundaries. Intelligence is far too infrequently shared, investigators say, often leaving information about dangerous militants woefully incomplete.' Bush was haunted by the ghost of a Hungarian-born billionaire. [Boston Globe -- Front Page] 'Republicans, too, have wealthy benefactors who contribute to conservative causes, Soros notes.
So why does one rich liberal provoke such animosity?
Perhaps, Soros's admirers say, it is because Soros acts against type. He made his money through sophisticated investments and yet has been highly critical of the system that enabled him to make so much money.
"Although I have made a fortune in the financial markets, I now fear that the untrammeled intensification of laissez-faire capitalism and the spread of market values into all areas of life is endangering our open and democratic society. Mexico's hot palette
Mexico City is in a constant state of flux. From the 1968 summer Olympics that spurred a boom in ritzy, Knot's Landing-isharchitecture to the modern day contemporary art exhibitions at the Museo Rufino and the chic Hotel Habita, one cannot deny that Mexico City is hip. Of course, any description of Mexico as hip is a somewhat loaded concept, considering that extreme poverty, corruption and art don't necessarily make the best bedfellows. Still, it's a place where violence and beauty coexist as parallel facets of everyday life. It is a pulsating diorama of colour, textures, sounds and smells that is making a major impact in the world of contemporary art and a lasting impression on travellers who choose to linger.

Bringing the Dark side of syndication to Light
Here is a first example: I'm publishing in RSS format a collection of quotes, s l a m:shorts, that I gather while reading my subscribed feeds in Radio Userland's aggregator. I then auto-syndicate this content into other pages published with Radio, such as this one, by placing activeRenderer's rssbox macro into my pages' template, producing the column on the right if you are reading the HTML version of this story. For an alternate, non outlined result, I could have used Userland's xml.rss.viewRssBox macro. Since the s l a m:shorts feed is available on the Web, there's nothing preventing other like-minded publishers to do the same. [s l a m]

JosÈ Guadalupe Posada's drawings unlocked the door that led to modern Mexican art
In the days before photography was a staple of newspapers and magazines, hand-drawn pictures predominated. Posada's contemporary audience was the people on the street who craved news.
But art is news that stays news, to adapt a famous phrase from Ezra Pound. Posada's pictures have outlasted their topical uses. In the years following his death, influential viewers, including painters Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, saw an important precursor in their effort to forge a distinctively Mexican art.

Yahoo! News - AP: Mexican Worker Deaths Rise Sharply
The jobs that lure Mexican workers to the United States are killing them in a worsening epidemic that is now claiming a victim a day, an Associated Press investigation has found. Though Mexicans often take the most hazardous jobs, they are more likely than others to be killed even when doing similarly risky work.
The death rates are greatest in several Southern and Western states, where a Mexican worker is four times more likely to die than the average U.S.-born worker. These accidental deaths are almost always preventable and often gruesome: Workers are impaled, shredded in machinery, buried alive. Some are 15 years old.

This is especially true in the world of digital video, where such great strides have been made in recent years that it's nearly impossible to consider modern codecs in the same breath as those from even five years ago.' Apple's implementation of QuickTime does not hold up well.

He told the Daily Mirror that detainees were shackled for up to 15 hours at a time in hand and leg cuffs with metal links to the skin. Mr Harith said punishment beatings were meted out by guards and prisoners were subjected to pyschological torture and mind games in an effort to break them.

Broadband at warp speed on the horizon
[GAM-Technology] 'Instead of bringing optical fibre into every home, which is generally considered the only way digital subscriber line (DSL) technology can compete with Internet by cable, Bell has developed a new strategy. Rejecting the optical-fibre-to-home idea as too expensive, Bell says it can achieve similar results if the optical fibre is brought to a kilometre or so from the home.
This strategy is based on two new technologies now ready for rollout. The first is OPI-DSLAM, which is a device that sits at the other end of the DSL system used by Bell through its Sympatico Internet service; it replaces the older DSLAM, which is limited to about six megabits a second. The second is the Nortel 6500, a technology that can deliver and manage fibre optic lines close enough to the home to realize superhigh speeds. [snip] Mr. Roman figures we can see 16 megabits a second in early 2004, and 22 mbps as early as next year. [snip] Very high speeds make it possible to deliver just about all content. When Mr. Roman and Mr. Lee talk about the world of broadband IP, they mean things like telephones using the Internet protocol (voice over IP, or VoIP), interactive video, multimedia content delivery (TV, music and other entertainment), push-to-talk (a kind of walkie-talkie system using cellphones), and a string of other services still fermenting in people's imaginations.'

Dan Gillmor posted chapter 1...
Dan Gillmor posted chapter 1 and the intro, in draft form, of his upcoming book "Making the News." [Scripting News] 'Why am I'm telling this story? Because journalism hit a pivot point that March morning.
Consider, first, the sequence of news flow: a feedback loop that started in an Arizona conference session, zipped to Orlando, came back to Arizona and ultimately then went global. In a world of satellite communications and fiber optics, real-time journalism is routine; but now we journalists had added the expertise of the audience. [snip] Tomorrow's news reporting and production will be more of a
conversation, or a seminar. The lines will blur between producers and consumers, changing the role of both in ways we're only beginning to grasp now. The communication network itself will be a medium for everyone's voice, not just the few who can afford to buy multi-million-dollar printing presses, launch satellites or win the government's permission to squat on the public's airwaves.
This evolution -- from journalism as lecture to journalism as a conversation or seminar -- will oblige the various communities of interest to adapt. Everyone, from journalists to the people we cover to our sources and the former audience, must change their ways.

View from the Alpha Geek . A...
View from the Alpha Geek. A really good synopsis on how RSS is connecting search with the way people share information. An snippet from the conversation with Rael Dornfest: TR: What makes RSS so important? DORNFEST: Its one of the most widely deployed Web services around. Its easily decentralized. Blogging, because of RSS, has gone from a popularity contest—how many times has my site been pinged?—to discovery of information. The browse metaphor for search has gone by the wayside. I think that RSS and syndication and blogs broadened it out. There was a lot of hype about this a couple of years ago but its only in the last year that things really started bubbling. I use weblogs to find information more than I use Google. I follow trails. Google will find you obvious answers. Google will find you what youre looking for. Blogs, with RSS, will find you what you never expected to find. [Technology Review Feed v2.1] [Scott Young's Radio Weblog]

The software, which fuses Bluetooth devices to the Mac, highlights the considerable advantages of Apple's Bluetooth wireless technologies, AppleScript and ease of use over the nearest Wintel equivalents. Microsoft has notoriously dragged its feet over Bluetooth support, and although it has a scripting engine (Windows Scripting Host) it doesn't match the elegance of AppleScript.'

New: Composer to 'Last, Rest-of-Name'
Here's a script that the Bach family would love, no doubt. Composer to 'Last, Rest-of-Name', written by Joel M. Watson, changes the Composer tag in iTunes from the format "Firstname Secondname ... Lastname" to "Lastname, Firstname Secondname ...". It automatically checks to see if the Artist tag is identical to the Composer tag and updates it if it is. This was designed for use with Classical composers (who usually have more than a First and Last name—e.g., George Frideric Händel), but will work with any composer name (whether it contains just 2 names or 13+ names) that is delimited by spaces.
