Why Did James Baker Turn Bush Into Nixon?

The first Bush-Kerry debate marked the moment that the savvy Bush-Cheney machine lost its once-invincible grip on the all-important TV game. [New York Times: Arts] [T]he thoroughness with which Mr. Baker's offstage maneuvers set his guy up for disaster on Sept. 30 may tell us more about the state of play in the campaign than the much-dissected style and substance of the debaters' onstage performance.

It was Mr. Baker's job to negotiate the 32-page debate agreement with Vernon Jordan, representing the Kerry camp, and by all accounts, the Bush campaign got almost everything it wanted. Yet as we now know, every Bush stipulation backfired, from the identically sized podiums that made the 5-foot-11 president look as if he needed a booster stool, to the flashing "Time's up!" lights that emphasized Mr. Kerry's uncharacteristic brevity and Mr. Bush's need to run out the clock by repeating stock phrases ad infinitum and ad absurdum.

The most revealing Baker error, though, was to insist that the first debate be about the president's purported strong suit, foreign affairs, instead of domestic policy. Did no one anticipate the likelihood that Iraq might once again explode that day, as it has on so many recent others? Insurgent attacks have gone from a daily average of 6 in May 2003 to as high as 87 in August. And so, as Adam Nagourney of The Times reported, "In the hours leading up to the debate, television images of aides to Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry were mixed with images of corpses and bloody children from Baghdad," on a day when some 35 Iraqi children were slaughtered by car bombs.'

Apple is 'clear winner' of PCWorld retail survey

PCWorld has published the results of its latest survey of online and retail technology stores, naming Apple the "clear winner" overall. Anne Kandra writes in the article accompanying the news that "63 percent of survey respondents who had visited the [brick-and-mortar] Apple Store rated the overall quality of its buying advice a 6 or 7." She goes on to say that almost 70 percent gave it the same score for ease of locating buying advice and over 70 percent felt the same way about the information it provided for making buying decisions. While visiting one of the stores, Kandra noted that "in contrast to the cluttered warehouse feel of many tech superstores, The Apple Store had a Zen-like simplicity." [MacCentral]

Ten years!

Ten years ago today I sent an email to the software industry, about a Marc Canter product rollout. That was followedby a series of emails, many hundred of them, most written by me, but somewritten by others. In 1997, the email flow spawned what I called a news site which eventually became known as a weblog, and then shortened to blog. That first email, as sloppy and weird as it was, pointed in the direction of free publishing for the people. If I could do it, so could you. In hindsight, it seems so obvious, but nothing really is until it exists. It was a bootstrap then, even more raw than the podcasts of today. But it led to many coooool things, and hopefully many more! Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement, and most important, thanks for doing your own blogs, that was always the goal, Billions of Websites, a chain of cooperation, working together in cyberspace, exploring with our minds and bodies. Here's a toast to another decade of fun, risks and learning. Namaste y'all!

Bush allies admit war blunders

· Bremer: too few troops · Rumsfeld: no al-Qaida link [Guardian Unlimited] 'Paul Bremer, who was America's most senior official in Baghdad until the handover last June, said the US committed two major blunders which compromised the course of events in Iraq: it went to war without enough troops and it did not contain the looting and violence after Saddam Hussein's regime fell. [snip] Mr Bremer's comments are also a belated rebuke to the defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, who overruled his army chief of staff and other military officials by opting for a smaller invasion force, and who famously dismissed reports of looting in April 2003 by saying "Stuff happens" and "Freedom is untidy".

Mr Rumsfeld attempted yesterday to undo the damage from statements made hours earlier, in which he acknowledged there was no connection between al-Qaida and Saddam. "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two," Mr Rumsfeld told the Council on Foreign Relations .

The statement - a u-turn on Mr Rumsfeld's assertion in September 2002 that the CIA had "bulletproof" evidence of a connection - appeared in line with a new intelligence review that failed to find a connection.'

[Via Guardian Unlimited]
'Kerry's initial mis-step seems to have allowed the Republicans to put his team on the defensive over a video whose content - most analysts believe - favours Bush's campaign, not least because it also succeeded in knocking two major news stories potentially damaging to the president off the front pages.

Allegations over missing explosives in Iraq and an FBI probe of Halliburton hit the Bush campaign all last week.'

Incredible. 'He can run but he can't hide.' Right. Of course bin Laden would prefer to have the extremist in power in the US as it helps inspire recruits.

REM frontman says visits help put the American political situation into focus
[Via The Globe and Mail: Arts]
The soft-spoken pop singer says the time he spent in Vancouver while recording R.E.M.'s new album Around the Sun helped put the American political situation into focus.

"It gave me a great sense of perspective, I have to say, being so close to my own country, but in a country that is clearly more liberal-minded," Stipe said on the phone from Chicago in an exclusive interview with The Canadian Press.

"There's a feeling in Canada of supporting . . . the creative arts and supporting people speaking out and supporting progress and living in the 21st century."

R.E.M. will embark on a Canadian tour next month, and Stipe said he is more than happy to "suck up" to The Great White North, calling Vancouver a "city of the future" with "brilliant restaurants" and "incredibly creative people."

During his stay he became hooked on the Canadian news media and still seeks it out online.

'The Guardian has learned that the Serious Fraud Office has joined the international effort at the request of the US Department of Justice in Washington. French and Nigerian officials are already involved in the inquiry.

Halliburton has become a political liability for the Bush administration as the US prepares to vote in presidential elections next week.

The company, one of the chief government contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been dogged by controversy, which includes claims of White House favouritism in awarding the firm billions of dollars of contracts without being forced to bid and Pentagon allegations that the firm has massively overcharged for its work.

It emerged late on Thursday that the FBI had launched an inquiry into how Halliburton secured contracts in Iraq, so far worth almost $9bn (£4.9bn).'

America's secret war

"In an article in the Saudi English daily The Saudi Gazette, Md. Maqdoom Mohiuddin and Khamis Mushayt wrote an op-ed and book review which exposes an alleged U.S. plot to invade Pakistan, and then later possibly Sudan, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey."

This surprising item alerted me to this book by StratFor's boss, George Friedman. StratFor is a private CIA, being paid by companies to tell them of risks.

The book tells of the 'real' reasons whey the US went into Iraq: to scare the shit out of other wavering countries to back the US and not Al Qaeda. Apparently. It says that WMD and terrorism links were merely a smoke screen, or propaganda.

This clarity (even though Wolfowitz has said this openly) wouldn't have been enough to pull the US street with them.

Study: 100,000 civilian deaths due to Iraq invasion

Today, the Lancet medical journal published a report which concludes that 100,000 civilians died in the US-led invasion of Iraq. This is an incredibly high estimate, and at first may seem too farfetched not to be propaganda. But it cannot easily be dismissed. The report's authors are researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad. The Lancet is a highly-respected, peer-reviewed publication. The report appears to be a serious academic attempt to study the public health consequences of the invasion. Also, The New Republic magazine has conducted an interview with Prof. Gilbert Burnham, the report's main author. Excerpts and comments below.

100,000 Civilian Deaths in Iraq War

October 29, 2004
[Via Cryptome]

'The major causes of death before the invasion were myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accidents, and other chronic disorders whereas after the invasion violence was the primary cause of death. Violent deaths were widespread, reported in 15 of 33 clusters, and were mainly attributed to coalition forces. Most individuals reportedly killed by coalition forces were women and children. The risk of death from violence in the period after the invasion was 58 times higher (95% CI 8·1–419) than in the period before the war.'

Election Day Uncertainty

ONE OF THE MOST disturbing, even destabilizing, aspects of the presidential election is the prospect that partisans on either side will deem the outcome invalid if their candidate doesn't win. Republicans are warning of massive fraud by new registrants not entitled to vote, while Democrats complain of an organized program to intimidate and disenfranchise eligible voters. The tension between preventing fraud and ensuring access is inherent in every election. But the expected closeness of this one, combined with the lingering bruises of the 2000 race, the record number of newly enrolled voters and the added uncertainties posed by a new federal law, have ratcheted that inevitable conflict to a new level. Those factors have produced an avalanche of pre-election litigation, threaten a difficult and perhaps ugly Election Day in the closest states, and raise the possibility that the victor may once again not be known for weeks.

At least 37 newspapers which backed Mr Bush in 2000 have switched sides to John Kerry.

A Sun-Times editorial listed a number of reasons for withdrawing its support from Mr Bush. The administration, it said, had been "wilfully and woefully unprepared to face" the insurgency in Iraq. The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy were "a costly misstep in a time of war" and the paper was concerned by the secrecy of Mr Bush's "subordinates such as Dick Cheney and John Ashcroft".

Mr Kerry, the paper said, acknowledged that the "United States is a world leader, not a rogue state".

The American Conservative chooses Kerry over Bush

Mark Frauenfelder: Chris sez: The American Conservative magazine, headed up by Pat Buchanon, has come out in favor of Kerry by coming out against Bush:

Bush has behaved like a caricature of what a right-wing president is supposed to be, and his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations. The launching of an invasion against a country that posed no threat to the U.S., the doling out of war profits and concessions to politically favored corporations, the financing of the war by ballooning the deficit to be passed on to the nation’s children, the ceaseless drive to cut taxes for those outside the middle class and working poor: it is as if Bush sought to resurrect every false 1960s-era left-wing cliché about predatory imperialism and turn it into administration policy. Add to this his nation-breaking immigration proposal -- Bush has laid out a mad scheme to import immigrants to fill any job where the wage is so low that an American can’t be found to do it -- and you have a presidency that combines imperialist Right and open-borders Left in a uniquely noxious cocktail.

Among the staff, they pretty much endorsed everyone from Bush to Badnarik to (shockingly enough) Nader. To say they endorsed Kerry is accurate, but also very misleading. One editor endorsed Kerry, the rest endorsed others.

The American Conservative: Kerry's the One
Bush has behaved like a caricature of what a right-wing president is supposed to be, and his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations. The CIA's Disappeared

THE BUSH administration pretends, and many Americans may believe, that the abuse of U.S.-held prisoners abroad ended after the release of sensational photographs from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Sadly, it did not. While blaming the crimes at Abu Ghraib on a small group of low-ranking soldiers, the White House, the Pentagon and the CIA have fought to preserve the exceptional and sometimes secret policies that allow U.S. personnel to violate the Geneva Conventions and other laws governing the handling and interrogation of foreign detainees. Under those policies, practices at odds with basic American values continue -- even if there are no sensational photos to document them.

Guardian Unlimited | US elections 2004 | Hollow Victory
It was Monday morning, the first day of early voting in Florida, and only an hour went by before the system collapsed in Broward County, ground zero for the 2000 fiasco in the state. Potential voters were turned away in this heavily Democratic county as election officials delivered a litany of excuses. The person in charge of elections is the secretary of state, Glenda Hood, a Republican.

It was an inauspicious beginning to Florida's election season, and a reminder that Democrats must remain vigilant against Republican efforts to steal yet another election. And in that regard, Republicans have been mighty busy.

[snip] These efforts are not isolated incidents, but part of the Republican Party's "Victory" programme. While ostensibly a voter registration and "get out the vote" operation, the programme includes a concerted nationwide effort by Republicans to lock in their electoral gains by any and all means necessary. Sounds like partisan rhetoric, sure, until you hear it from the source. Alluding to the fraud committed by his party in his home state of South Dakota, former Republican governor and congressman Bill Janklow told the Associated Press last week that the entire Victory programme is rife with electoral fraud: "These people are cheating. When you tamper with it, you cheat the system. And cheating in elections is the worst form of cancer because it's uncontrollable."

Rick Steves on the value of travel

Travel can help mend a fractured world (USA Today, 17 October 2004)

For many Americans, the critical question in this election season is, "How can we make America safer in the world?"

Call me a girly man, but I think -- given the fact that Americans are outnumbered 20 to 1 on this planet -- we'd be safer by better understanding our world. A great first step is to travel -- thoughtfully.

If Americans traveled more, we'd better understand our place on this complex planet and fit in more comfortably. And eventually, perhaps, we wouldn't need to spend as much as the rest of the world combined on our military to feel safe....

Kerry for President

We do, however, fault Mr. Bush for exaggerating to the public the intelligence given him privately and for alienating allies unnecessarily. Above all, we fault him for ignoring advice to better prepare for postwar reconstruction. The damage caused by that willful indifference is incalculable. There is no guarantee that Iraq would be more peaceful today if U.S. forces had prevented postwar looting, secured arms depots, welcomed international involvement and transferred authority to Iraqis more quickly. But the chances of success would have been higher. Yet the administration repeatedly rebuffed advice to commit sufficient troops. Its disregard for the Geneva Conventions led to a prison-torture scandal in both Iraq and Afghanistan that has diminished for years, if not decades, the United States' image and influence abroad. In much of the world, in fact, U.S. prestige is at a historic low, partly because of the president's high-handed approach to allies on issues ranging far beyond Iraq.

These failings have a common source in Mr. Bush's cocksureness, his failure to seek advice from anyone outside a narrow circle and his unwillingness to expect the unexpected or adapt to new facts. These are dangerous traits in any president but especially in a wartime leader. They are matched by his failure to admit his errors or to hold senior officials accountable for theirs.

A Five-Point Roadmap to Podcast's Future

by Tod Maffin [about me]

Podcasting has burst into the net consciousness with a pace that has stunned even the most seasoned Internet veterans. Dozens of new podcasts and tools are being released daily. But when technology moves at this pace, it tends to scatter its focus. What I propose below are the key next steps in the evolution -- a five-point road map to the future of podcasting.

If Tod keeps this up he's going to be a real leader in this movement.

Several members of the original team that built the Whitehouse website 10 years ago are reporting that the Bush administration is systematically changing and/or removing content from the archives. Let's get these assholes out of our whitehouse.

If you were going to rank all the reasons for Apple's mid-nineties revival, you'd have to put the success of the original iMac (along with the return of a guy named Steve) right at the top of the list. The brightly colored plastic all-in-one not only inspired all sorts of copycat designs, computer-related (mice, printers, and hubs) and otherwise (the George Foreman grill), but also made computing fun again. The flat-panel iMac introduced two years ago had the same effect -- here was a computer you wouldn't mind displaying out in the open, instead of tucking your system away behind closed doors.

Portable sat-radio to impact "air" radio?

If this rumour is true, XM Satellite Radio and Delphi are going to introduce a wearable satellite radio very soon. Satradio until now has been mostly restricted to Americans in cars. The CRTC is considering an application for Canadian distribution from the CBC and Sirius. This could be another technology to nip away at the market share that over-the-air radio broadcasters have. [via Engadget]

Sense & Sensors in Digital Photography

In sum, with the range of sensors used in cameras today, there is no point to worrying about a few megapixels more or less. Shrinking cells to fit more of them in the sensor can lose more information than it gains. The size of the cells is likely to be more important than their number. For the same money, I would rather buy a larger sensor with fewer pixels than a smaller sensor with more pixels. If nothing else, the larger sensor is likely to be sharper because it will be less sensitive to movement of the camera.

The World According to Bush review (2004) Monde Selon Bush - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
The story on William Karel's documentary, The World According to Bush, is that it was the alternate choice to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 to be entered in the Cannes Film Festival for 2004.  Both documentaries deal with similar subject matter, and discuss some of the same things about the man in the White House, his past ties, his current business interests, and his motivations for heading into war with Iraq.  While Fahrenheit 9/11 would probably get the nod in terms of entertainment value, as most Moore documentaries have a good deal of humor and bombastic dialogue, Karel's is actually the superior film in terms of content and expertise as far as how to make a quality documentary, and utilizes its source material (most of what is included in the movie came from the writings of Eric Laurent) quite well with video footage and interviews.
I'm beginning to resent Moore.

The World According to Bush
Never before in the history of the world's democracies have one man and his team acted with such arrogance and impunity, defying international law and creating an unprecedented grouping of interests: the project blends politics and personal interests in an atmosphere of total cynicism. The latest war against Iraq, with its totally unforeseeable consequences, hides another danger, that of seeing America launch further "civilizing" operations of a similar type, imposed by force, fired by ideas that are at best naïve and at worst totally hypocritical, calculated over a dangerously short term.

High-stakes banking in Mexico - Scotiabank is pursuing the country's young and affluent
But it's Mexican demographics that really make bankers giddy. The median age of the country's 104-million people is just 24; some 60 per cent of the population is under 30. Young people, as everyone knows, like to consume [~] toasters, then cars, then homes, as Scotiabank chief executive officer Rick Waugh is fond of repeating. And consumption requires banking services and credit. Moreover, Mexico is chronically "under-banked," which means that millions of Mexicans don't have credit cards or even bank accounts.

But while the numbers are big, they may not be as big as they seem. Inverlat is focused on more upscale, middle-class customers, a group representing only about 25-million people. And the reason so few Mexicans put money in banks, aside from a residual distrust of the banking system, is that many have no money to put in them.

The minimum wage is roughly $120 (U.S.) a month, and 10 per cent of the population lives on less than $1 day, according to the World Bank. The looming question, then, is whether the benefits of Mexico's economic resurgence will accrue mainly to the privileged, or also to young people struggling to rise out of poverty and into the mainstream. On that unknown rests Scotiabank's billion-dollar gamble.

Dave Winer posts: "Seriously, if you vote for Bush and he wins, we're going to blame you for what happens in the next four years." That sounds like a seriously flawed perspective in any democracy. This shouldn't be an "us against them" discussion. Regardless of who wins the election, we are all still citizens of the USA living under, and supporting (I hope) a common belief in our constitution. Differences are going to exist. Differences in interpretation of the constitution, differences in our beliefs about what is wrong in our country and the world, differences in whom we think can best lead our country. That is OK. Hey, it sure beats a one party system. Let us talk like reasonable men and women and put ridicule behind us. Fox News producer sues Bill "STFU" O'Reilly for sex harassment

Xeni Jardin: Smoking Gun says:

Hours after Bill O'Reilly accused her of a multimillion dollar shakedown attempt, a female Fox News producer fired back at the TV star today, filing a lawsuit claiming that he subjected her to repeated instances of sexual harassment and spoke often, and explicitly, to her about phone sex, vibrators, threesomes, masturbation, the loss of his virginity, and sexual fantasies. Below you'll find a copy of Andrea Mackris's complaint, an incredible page-turner that quotes O'Reilly, 55, on all sorts of lewd matters. Based on the extensive quotations cited in the complaint, it appears a safe bet that Mackris, 33, recorded some of O'Reilly's more steamy soliloquies. For example, we direct you to his Caribbean shower fantasies. While we suggest reading the entire document, TSG will point you to interesting sections on a Thailand sex show, Al Franken, and the climax of one August 2004 phone conversation. (22 pages)

Apple's fourth quarter, by the numbers

On Wednesday, Apple not only reached a major milestone with its highest fourth quarter earnings in nine years, according to CEO Steve Jobs, but it also shattered its previous record with more than 2 million iPods shipped during the fourth quarter of its 2004 fiscal year -- an incredible 500 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2003 and 134 percent more than the previous quarter. That number not only helped the company reach a commanding 92.1 percent share of the market for hard drive-based MP3 players, according to a recent report released by The NPD Group, but it also brought in $537 million in revenue -- more than any other product segment during the quarter and almost 23 percent of the $2.35 billion revenue Apple reported. iPod revenue was up 344 percent and 116 percent year-over-year and sequentially, respectively. The Seed of Apple's Innovation
I get asked a lot why Apple's customers are so loyal. It's not because they belong to the Church of Mac! That's ridiculous.

It's because when you buy our products, and three months later you get stuck on something, you quickly figure out [how to get past it]. And you think, "Wow, someone over there at Apple actually thought of this!" And then three months later you try to do something you hadn't tried before, and it works, and you think "Hey, they thought of that, too." And then six months later it happens again. There's almost no product in the world that you have that experience with, but you have it with a Mac. And you have it with an iPod.

On the plane last night I lucked out and got the middle seat between a couple from Canada, and they wanted to sit together, so I got the aisle seat and this morning my back feels just fine.

We talked about US politics and eventually it turned to Bush-bashing, and they wondered if there were any Republicans on the plane because we were talking really loud.

A white-haired woman in the seat in front turned around and passed back a political cartoon which seemed to say Bush was the right choice. I said I don't understand, does this mean you're voting for Bush? She just wanted us to know there are "other points of view." I handed it back and said I know, half the people are voting for Bush. Then I turned to my Canadian friends and said "But I have no respect for them."

Seriously, if you vote for Bush and he wins, we're going to blame you for what happens in the next four years.

Round Two: Bush Versus Bush

Mindful of the spin game, the President angles for a favorable comparison with himself [TIME's Top Stories] 'In this uneven fight, second-debate Bush defeated first-debate Bush. This, of course, is the way Bush and his handlers want the media to spin this debate—"Bush improved, therefore Bush won" —since, after all, it was a fight the President was bound to win. All he had to do was avoid kicking over his stool, shouting "No fair!" and storming off stage.'

public radio's first podcast

iPodder reached a milestone today with the launch of Public Radio's first Podcast.

Only three short weeks ago, when we were just starting out, public radio veteran Tony Kahn sent me an email about a short feature he directs and produces for WBGH in Boston called Morning Stories. The idea, basically, is to find people who've never worked on radio before and get them to talk about something that happened to them, funny or sad, that anyone can connect to. It's obvious why Tony connected to podcasting.

Although I don't have the details, Tony went to bat with the 'powers that be' within NPR to create a podcast feed of his program. He describes them as "Short, five minute personal stories to freshen up your morning pod-fast."

Thanks to Tony's pioneering work and technical assistance from Rick Wezowicz, I predict it will only a matter of weeks before we see a cavalcade of NPR programming available as podcasts.

Build your own radio station

On October 28, dozens of radio stations will launch on 97.7 FM in Minneapolis. Yes, dozens. All using the same frequency. The Walker Art Center is giving workshops this month to people interested in building their own mini-transmitters out of supplied kits (and encased, oddly, in household objects). The transmitters are milliwatt, meaning they can only go a city block or so. And on October 28, about 30 people will broadcast from parked cars along Lake Street, a major thoroughfare in Minneapolis. If all goes as planned, drivers tuning their radios to 97.7 FM will be able to hear independent talk radio and music stations fading in and out as they travel along the 6-mile stretch of road. It's part of the Radio Re-Volt project and coincides with a community radio conference the following day.

Indie label rejects DRM

Cory Doctorow: David sez, "A European indie music label [!K7] is taking an unusual approach to the issue of CD copy protection - it is branding all its releases with a sticker proclaiming the absence of any such control measure.... 'Copy protection kills customer relationships,' the label says on its website. 'That's why, from now on, !K7 releases will carry a new logo: 'NO copy protection - respect the music.'... The company believes it's all a matter of trust. 'Only those to whom respect is given show respect themselves,' it notes. In other words, treat your customers as potential pirates and they'll soon tell you to f**k off and not buy your product.'"
