New Trends In Online Traffic (Washington Post)

While growth is slowing at most top Internet sites, it is skyrocketing at sites focused on social networking, blogging and local information.

The dramatic success of those Internet categories is apparent from a recent online-traffic analysis provided by market research firm ComScore Media Metrix, which examined visitor growth rates among the 50 top Web sites over the past year. Full article here.

Things were going quite nicely until with about 300,000 downloads over the first few weeks, and then they saw a spike in traffice. They have 300,000 downloads overnight, three-quarters of them from outside of Denmark. They had been Digged!! From Henrik: “Digg is a little nerdy website about technology and so on.” Suddenly, “we had to talk to the record companies about 1.2 m downloads,” Henrik said. And the files were in the wild even high quality files encoded. surround sound. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the room with Henrik and the record execs.

It's been a long wait for SonicStudio to get a replacement for SonicHD out the door. And we'll have to wait a while longer. The great news is that things are on their way. B.J. Buchalter of Metric Halo has been active on the Sonic Mailing List and very forthcoming and honest. Here's a snippet from an email he wrote today.

"All I can say about this is "stay tuned"; in particular Sonic has announced products that will support this application (24 channels of AES 192k Single wire on Firewire). No Format converter or ADAT required. But you will still have to wait a little bit, so if you have an immediate need you'll have to look elsewhere."

Australian Government sets start date for digital radio

Australians are set to receive digital radio broadcasts starting January 1, 2009, according to Federal Communications Minister Helen Coonan.

The national digital radio rollout will begin in six capital cities, using the European Eureka 147 system. Trials have been running in Sydney and Melbourne since 2003.

This is the first time complete and total access to original tracks with remix and sampling possibilities have been officially offered on line. In keeping with the spirit of the original album, Brian and David are offering for download all the multitracks on two of the songs. Through signing up to the user license, and in line with Creative Commons licenses, you are free to edit, remix, sample and mutilate these tracks however you like. Add them to your own song or create a new one. Visitors are welcome to post their mixes or songs that incorporate these audio files on the site for others to hear and rate. Stay tuned, the remix site is coming soon!

FCP Tip: Perfecting the Ken Burns

This tip is directed at people who love the Ken Burns effect which essentially is the slow zoom into a photo. The effect at times induces flickers while moving (especially vertically) which is unacceptable if it is meant for broadcast. This usually tends to happen when the photo itself is not scanned but rather shot at -- something that happens in run-n-shoot documentaries all the time. Creative Mac has some really nice tips in how to eliminate those flickers. Even to those quite familiar with Final Cut can learn a thing or two from this article.

CBC Radio’s podcast expansion on its way!

As you may know, CBC Radio will be launching a significant expansion of its podcasting trial soon. I’m really excited by what we’ve got planned for you. There’ll be something for everyone: Some of our most-requested shows — plus some new regional podcasts and shows you can only hear via podcast!
While I can’t tell you the lineup yet, I will tell you this: We’ve listened to all your Ideas over the past few months and, Currently, we’re setting up the servers. We’re expecting to get swamped, but we’re sure our I.T. staff will be able to respond to a meltdown As It Happens.
