Someone recently searched for a script to lock a keychain. Here's the code to lock and unlock keychains.
LockThese were tested in OS X 10.2 but they might work in previous versions of OS X - I don't recall. Watch for line wrapping if you copy and paste the examples from your browser - they're all one-liners. Warning regarding passwords in scripts: I don't recommend storing passwords in AppleScript scripts due to the ease with which they can be compromised.

tell application "Keychain Scripting" to lock -- locks all keychains
Unlock
tell application "Keychain Scripting" to unlock keychain "keychain name" -- asks for password

Apple: Creating PDF Workflow Options
Apple has posted documentation showing how users can add a menu item to the PDF workflow pop-up menu simply by adding an item to any one of several directories. The type of item placed in one of these directories determines what the item does when the user selects it from the PDF workflow pop-up menu. Items that can be used include a folder or alias to a folder, an application or an alias to an application, a UNIX tool or alias to a UNIX tool, and an AppleScript file or an alias to an AppleScript file. An example is given of a script that opens a new message in Mail and attaches the PDF file created when printing. [MacScripter.net]

Surfin' Safari: Dave Hyatt: Your thoughts go here
Dave Hyatt, of the Safari development team, is accepting Safari feedback on his weblog. He bravely says:
Ok, so let's try an experiment. If you want to give me GUI feedback on Safari, post a comment or a trackback in response to this blog entry. I will read the comments and follow all trackbacks for information about what changes/additions you'd most like to see in Safari. If you have a non-GUI request, e.g., some specific CSS flaw or DOM flaw that you feel should be really high priority, you can post here too. Here's an opportunity to influence the future of Safari. Use it wisely.

Fixed an error reading Raster EPS files where an error would occur ("Extended Info Error"). The "Don't show window on launch" option now works as it should.

TidBITS: iPhoto 2 Steps into the Frame
In this week's issue of TidBITS, Adam Engst offers his take on iPhoto 2. He says:
Some people will find the addition of AppleScript support particularly welcome, though I haven't been able to confirm how complete it is. It looks, for instance, as though you can read the date of a photo via a script, but you can't change it, something you can do to a single photo (but not multiple photos) in iPhoto's interface. Since digital cameras sometimes lose track of the correct date, a script that set dates for multiple images would be helpful. He goes on to say that iPhoto 2 is a must-have upgrade for current iPhoto users.

Scripting OS X's System Preferences
Many scripters are interested in scripting system preferences in OS X. Users of OS X 10.2.3 or later might want to explore Apple's beta GUI Scripting software to accomplish this. Apple has posted several example scripts that include Setting Trackpad-Mouse Speed, Setting Network Time, Change Appearance to Graphite and Activate | Deactivate Firewall.
Tools such as Apple's UI Element Inspector and PreFab Software's recently released UI Browser will help to reveal the underlying elements of GUI scripting. Of course it's important to remember that GUI scripting is still in the beta phase of development. This means that features are likely to change, or break, and the scripts that you create will work only for others who have installed the beta software. Apple warns that the software "should not be used in mission critical environments." Have fun!

In this issue of Roll Your Own, Charles Ross discusses Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and how it relates to AppleScript. He says:
AppleScript doesn’t include all of the concepts of OOP, or at least not as much as languages such as Objective-C or C++. If you’re familiar with these languages at all, you’ll find that AppleScript doesn’t support the concept of private and public properties or handlers. All such items in a script object are public. But you can still use the concepts of OOP with AppleScript. AppleScript calls objects script objects, as you’ll see when we begin creating objects.[via MacScripter.net]
