As some of you may or may not know, until recently I was a member of the MacScripter.net team. As a result of my daily duties there, I had access to a lot of news and information related to AppleScript. MacScripter.net didn't have RSS feeds so I created AppleScript Info in an attempt to reach out to those who prefer to get their AppleScript news via syndication. Now that they've filled the gap, I don't see the need to continue to publish AppleScript Info. Thanks to everyone who has visited and offered feedback. I've enjoyed it while it lasted!

Congratulations MacScripter.net!

The MacScripter.net crew has rolled out a new version of the web site with several changes aimed at enhancing and expanding the resources which are available to their guests. In addition to all of the goodies that scripters have come to rely on, they've added Code Exchange, for sharing script tips, and Scriptable Applications, a list of scriptable applications with downloadable PDFs of their AppleScript dictionaries. ZDNet: Music-swapping software makes comeback

iCommune, software that allow iTunes users to share their music over a network, and software that drew fire from Apple, now uses "a combination of little-known features in iTunes along with code written in AppleScript, the Mac's built-in scripting language." DonkeyHelper 1.2

This free, open source script allows users to automatically add files to the download list of MLdonkey by clicking on a file URL that begins with 'ed2k://' for eDonkey2000 and 'fha://' for Overnet. The script requires OS X 10.2 or later and MLdonkey 2.00 or later. Release notes: Detection of sites that don't send complete URLs. Better handling of special characters. Updated browser compatibility list. The script is a little bit smaller. Now works correctly with the multinet version of mldonkey.

Virex 7.2.1 available from .Mac

This isn't related to AppleScript but it's noteworthy for many .Mac subscribers who use Fink and Virex (I don't know about Virex releases from other sources). Virex 7.2 has hosed many Fink installations and here's what the Virex 7.2.1 ReadMe has to say about it:

During the installation of Virex 7.2, the Virex installer will copy a number of files into the /sw/lib directory. Fink software installations that are residing on the machine may then fail to work as their libraries will have been overwritten with the Virex 7.2 libraries. Virex 7.2.1 resolves this issue by installing the libraries to the /usr/local/vscanx/lib directory.

PDF U 1.0

PDF U is a utility that allows users to quickly turn on the PDF Services menu that Apple has hidden in the OS 10.2 print dialog boxes. Normally, users must go to a special folder on the system, create a folder called "PDF Services" and then add AppleScript scripts. PDF U automates this procedure and provides a few scripts to get things started. PDF U is DonationWare and requires Mac OS X 10.2 or higher.

Apple: Safari Beta II Script Collection

Apple has updated their Safari script collection with scripts that take advantage of features found in the most recent beta release of Safari. Some of the scripts also take advantage of Apple's UI Scripting beta software. For instance, one of the UI scripts will combine the open browser windows into a single tabbed window.

Apple: Safari, AppleScript and JavaScript

As noted yesterday, the latest version of Safari includes the 'do JavaScript' command in its AppleScript dictionary. By using the command, users can create AppleScript scripts that interact with the Safari JavaScript DOM (Document Object Model). Apple provides sample scripts along with links to Safari Developer FAQ, Safari JavaScript DOM Part 1 and Safari JavaScript DOM Part 2.

QuickTime Broadcaster 1.0.1 available via Software Update

QuickTime Broadcaster is Apple's scriptable live encoding software that lets users produce live events for online delivery. Sample scripts are available from Apple to demonstrate the use of a qualified Bluetooth cell phone and Sony Ericisson Clicker to remotely control Broadcaster. Version 1.0.1 provides improvements to live broadcast recording and streaming as well as UI enhancements. Update: It appears that this version was likely released prior to today, indicating that Software Update might have suffered from a brain fart on my machine.

iPhoto Library Manager 2.0

iPhoto Library Manager is a fully AppleScriptable application that allows users to split photos up into any number of separate libraries, share a common photo library with multiple users, store them on any disk connected to the computer, and easily switch back and forth between them. Mac OS X 10.1.2 or higher and iPhoto 1.x or 2.0 are required. Among the many changes in this release is the inclusion of sample AppleScript scripts.

MLS DataBase Publisher 2.2v3

MLS DataBase Publisher allows users to transfer data, including images, from a FileMaker Pro database to an Adobe InDesign document. DBP requires OS X 10.2 or later and is open source (AppleScript Studio). Release notes: Fixes a bug where DBP might crash complaining that the variable apsAction was not defined. Contains minor changes to the GUI and an updated manual.

iPhoto Diet is a free utility for slimming down iPhoto libraries. It removes the original copies of modified photos based on user defined criteria. It is a useful when used prior to burning iPhoto libraries onto CDs or for freeing up hard drive space. Source code is available. Release notes: Added compatibility for iPhoto 2 libraries. iPhoto Diet is now an Applescript Studio application (previously an AppleScript droplet.) Added an iPhoto Library list view that stores library paths. Multiple iPhoto libraries can be scanned at once. Progress of library scans is displayed. Added "Strip Icon Thumbnails" option for removing the resource fork of photo files. Added help messages within the application.

iPhoto Extractor 1.7.3

iPhoto Extractor will traverse iPhoto's library structure and copy target files to a user defined destination, allowing users to import all or some images back into iPhoto. The download includes an AppleScript droplet that runs in Mac OS 9 to 10.2.x and a "Pro" version (AppleScript Studio app) that runs in Mac OS X 10.2.x or higher. iPhoto Extractor is freeware. Release notes: Dialog box when the script completes now has a 30 second timeout and closes itself after the timeout, eliminating an AppleScript event timeout if users were not around to accept the dialog in time.

Folder Action Manager 1.0.1

Thanks to user feedback, an update is already available to address a problem discovered in yesterday's version 1.0 release. All version 1.0 users are urged to download the new version. Release notes: Fixed an error that would occur silently when deleting the last script from a folder action, and which could make the application crash on a subsequent run after the folder had been deleted in the Finder. Impression is a low cost ($20) OS X backup utility used to back up directories to, and restore them from, multiple optical discs (CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD-R are supported). Matemática 2

Matemática modules contain most of the mathematical functions that one would need to work from basic algebra to more complex operations. The five modules have been divided (more or less) in order to make each module target a specific subject and work independently of other modules. Release notes: Many errors were fixed, handlers were added and optimized, and there should be an increase in the speed of some computations. International support for numbers has been added and modules now accept numbers as text or numbers. Users of previous versions are urged to upgrade.

OmniWeb 4.2 released

The Omni Group today released OmniWeb 4.2, an update to the web browser built exclusively for Mac OS X, and announced development on OmniWeb 4.5 - the first version of OmniWeb to incorporate the open source WebCore framework from Apple. Changes in version 4.2 include extended and cleaned up AppleScript support not limited to the addition of access to bookmarks through AppleScript commands.

Early versions of OmniWeb 4.5 are available through the Sneaky Peek preview program. Current OmniWeb 4.x license holders interested in testing and providing feedback on the application can download the first Sneaky Peek release, OmniWeb 4.5sp1, today. OmniWeb 4.5sp1 will only run in licensed mode and a demo is not available.

UnicodeChecker 1.5.6

UnicodeChecker is a freeware application that displays detailed information for every code point from the Unicode Standard. The information includes Unicode name, UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32 encodings, XHTML entities, mapping info and a lot more. Users can browse characters by code point or find them by their Unicode name. Oak & Apple: Privileged Exec 1.0

Privileged Exec is an AppleScript framework that makes it extremely easy to create applications that run Unix commands as root without prompting the user for an administrator password every time. This is accomplished by securely storing an administrator password in the default Keychain. This password can then be used to run any Unix commands as root with no user interaction. For an example of scripting the Keychain, check the source code of Privileged Exec.

Scheduler is an all-around scheduling utility for appointments, launching applications, documents and AppleScripts. Release notes: Fixed bug that prevented the update of an event scheduling the shutdown of the computer by a script. iTunes_2cd is a free, open source AppleScript that assists the user with burning a backup of a MP3 collection onto CD. It does so by "slicing" the iTunes song library into chunks of 600 MB (or another user specified size) and then creating a playlist for each of these chunks, ready to be burned.

UI Browser allows users to explore, control and monitor the user interface of most Mac OS X applications. It allows scripters to navigate the user interface hierarchy and then, with a single click, generate useful AppleScript statements which take advantage of Apple's GUI scripting. Release notes for this version are currently unavailable. UI Browser is still available at an introductory price of $24.95 if purchased by April 19, 2003. Update: This release makes minor tweaks and fixes to the user interface. Choose 'Version History' from UI Browser's Help menu for a complete list of changes.

Clipboard Scripts package announced

Automated Workflows announced today that a "Clipboard Scripts" package is now available.

"Clipboard Scripts" is a package of 20 AppleScripts, which may be used by virtually anyone to become more efficient while performing everyday tasks. Once installed, "Clipboard Scripts" are accessed through Apple's "Script Menu", which is installed with Mac OS X 10.2 and later. By integrating these AppleScripts with the "Script Menu", they may be triggered at any time, from within any application.

A 5-script package is available as freeware or the complete package of 20 scripts is available for as little as $5.

Scheduler 3.4.1

Scheduler for Macintosh is a scheduling utility for appointments and for launching applications, documents and AppleScript scripts. It is also able to trigger the download of web pages and files in many browsers and it can record and import sounds, such as iTunes MP3 tracks or your favorite game's sounds. iRoster is a tool for finding and connecting to Rendezvous enabled services such as web servers, Apple File Sharing (AFP) servers, and others. It can also advertise other services that may not yet work with Rendezvous. This version fixes several bugs and adds an important feature to iRoster - users can now attach custom AppleScript actions to Rendezvous services. The attached scripts can then be executed automatically when new Rendezvous services come and go online and offline.

Script Debugger/AppleScript Studio Sample Project

Late Night Software has made a sample project available that illustrates how to use Script Debugger's AppleScript Debugger within AppleScript Studio. It requires Script Debugger 3.0.6 and the Script Debugger Nub 1.4.1 update. The updated nub is offered for Script Debugger 3.0.6 users who are experiencing problems while debugging AppleScript Studio applications.

Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes news

Updated: CDDB Safari Kit - This download contains two scripts: "CDDB Safari", which uses Safari to search CDDB for info on the selected or currently playing iTunes track, and "CDDB Track Names Safari", which imports the track names of the current CDDB album page to the track names of the front playlist. Both are no longer Run-Only (so you can open them in Script Editor), and "CDDB Safari" now offers options to search by track name, artist, and album.

Reinstated: Filenames to Track Names - This script copies the filenames of the selected tracks to the corresponding track name tags. It was pulled a while back because of problems when using it while iTunes 3's Advanced Preferences is set to Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized. Unfortunately, while this is set iTunes will try to name the file with the track name, the reverse of the script's function, so you'll never get it to work correctly. Works fine in OS 9 with iTunes 2.0.4.

Cronathon 1.6

Cronathon allows users to run OS X's daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks at once, or separately. Release notes: Reintroduced the monthly cron task. Maintenance reports are sent to user's mail account via sendmail. Cronathon outputs reports to ~/Documents/MaintReports/. Updated user interface.
