Angel Investors.
I'm exploring and learning all i can about Angel Capital and Venture Caital for about-time. And I figured some of you may be interested in some of the things I'm finding.
What I'm basically seeing from these is that most of the Angel Investors are really cautious; looking to invest in companies that are already on their way with an impressive board of directors, or proven sales. I'm not sure how that's going to effect about-time. We've got a good useful product that is still unfinished, but won't be too long in coming, the business model is proven and simple, but management? Well, there's me, and I can herd cats pretty well, write up decent business plans, and manage a companies expenses, but I'm not a manager in the traditional sense. I want to to produce nice products with other talented programmers. I want someone else to manage all the "business" aspects of it but I can't afford to hire one and I don't have any personal contacts who would want the job, or be good at it. Well, not that I can think of at the moment.
Maybe we'll just end up getting it to a marketable stage and put it on the web without help and see what happens. Personally I'd like funding so that I can make it a better product and hire someone who can really market it to the companies who would end up making it profitable.
I just realized that this blog is documenting the beginnings of an internet startup in realtime. I feel so official. ;)
(later addition) What I'm really wishing is that there was some system out there that brought developers together with business people who want to get in on the ground floor of emerging companies. By ground floor I mean, "welcome to our plot, here's the blueprint, grab a shovel" not "here's a desk and wads of cash". I'm sure there are Business people out there who love starting companies. And I *know* there are developers out there who love writing useful new software. Why isn't there a place that brings them together? Or is there and I just haven't found it yet? What I'm thinking of is before going for venture capital. I'm thinking earlier on, like where about-time is now. We can prove the idea, we need people to guide the company side of things and, when we're ready, help sell the VCs on the idea. [weblog.masukomi.org]
