AYE Day 3 - Writing Workshop

The morning session I chose to attend on day 3 of AYE 2004 was Naomi Karten and Johanna Rothman's Writing Workshop.  During the workshop, Naomi and Johanna talked about some of their experiences with their writing and we did a few exercises where we had to write under different conditions.  One exercise involved spending 10 minutes writing about something we are passionate about.  After we finished, we were invited to read what we had written.  After I read mine, Johanna requested that I put what I wrote up on my blog.  Here it is:

One day last summer I walked into Office Depot with the aim of replenishing my supply.  I immediately noticed the changes.  The people were unfamiliar.  The shelves had been rearranged.  I started feeling queasy.  I quickened my pace.  Over there, the pens and pencils.  I started scanning up and down the racks of writing instruments.  They weren't there.

I walked over to talk to the manager.  "I'm sorry," he said.  "We don't stock those anymore."  Now the panic really set in.  I wouldn't be getting my Ultra Fine Flairs.

I drove down to Office Max.  "What the..."  It wasn't there anymore.  The store was closed and empty.  The only remnant was the clean spots on the concrete above the doors and windows spelling out "Office Max" on the surface of the building; shadows of letters that were now gone, burned into the building by years of sunlight.

I choked back a scream...
