IBM is attempting to build by the end of this year a 32-terabyte storage system out of a 3 x 3 x 3 array of 27 small, relatively simple hard-disk modules it calls collective information bricks. "We like to say that our goal is you will be able to hug the Library of Congress by the end of this year," quipped Jai Menon who heads storage research at IBM's Almaden Research Center.
