Hollywood vs Information technology

Herein lies the conflict between Hollywood and the technology industry in a nutshell. One sees content as the critical resource, and data networks as simply another mechanism to deliver it. The other sees connectivity as the essential factor, with movies being one of many resources that can travel along those connections. Hollywood sees a moral dimension in protecting its property and the creative works of its artists, as well as a nobility in bringing entertainment to the masses. The tech industry thinks bits are bits, and the only moral value that really matters is freedom. [Werblog]

One should add that the music industry is a vile bunch bent on exploiting artists and buying political "representatives" to preserve their privileges at the expense of all other people... not exactly an idealist or honest group. [this item]

Rules of the Pub

"Passport to the Pub" is a guide to the psychology and etiquette of the British pub.
Before you can order at all, you must learn the correct bar-counter etiquette. You will notice that the bar counter of the pub is the only place in Britain in which anything is sold or served without the formation of a queue. Many visitors have observed that queuing is almost a national pastime for the British, who will automatically arrange themselves into an orderly line at bus stops, shop counters, ice-cream stalls, lifts, entrances, exits, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason.

Distributed development vs Quality of design

It's very frustrating doing any kind of design work, architectural or UI, with a dispersed group [...] There just isn't enough bandwidth to do good design when a team is geographically dispersed. I'm not saying it can't be done at all, but the results are vastly better when the entire team is physically in the same location. I'm convinced of this, and will never agree to do software development with a dispersed team. [Joel on Software[this item]

Weblogs in a corporate environment

A weblog (K-Log) is a powerful publishing tool. It takes desktop publishing to a new level by adding instant one-to-many distribution, powerful organization (time-based and by individual), and connectivity (via blogrolls, subscription lists, and community features). [John Robb[this item]
