Poison lies in the quantity
Five centuries ago, Swiss-born Paracelsus (1493-1541) wrote
dosis sola facit venenum— a latin phrase meaning
dosage alone makes the poisonaka
the dose makes the poison. Were this biological principle widely understood, much hysteria would be avoided.
Johann Wilhelm Ritter, born 1776-Dec-16
Johann Wilhelm Ritter (1776-1810) was born on December 16 in Samitz (then Silesia, Germany, now Chojnow, Poland). A pioneer of electrochemistry, he carried out electrolysis of water in 1799, investigated electroplating in 1800, discovered ultraviolet radiation in 1801, and built the first dry cell battery and accumulator in 1803.
Ludwig van Beethoven, born 1700-Dec-16
German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was born on December 16. Beethoven's story is one of personal triumph over tragedy and supreme musical achievement. To celebrate, listen to the magnificent symphonies 5 & 6 (Pastorale); the 1982 recording by Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker is excellent (Deutsche Grammophon).
