A few notes on Apple and downloadable music

A few weeks ago, Steve Jobs indicated that Apple had sold 30m songs since April 2003, and was currently selling songs at a rate close to 100m/year (which translates to almost $100m in revenue for Apple). By comparison, the music industry boasts of over $10 billion in annual revenue, and vinyl records brought in $45.4 million in 2002. Apple is likely to raise its share of the annual music market to 10% within two years. Their profit lies in increased iPod sales, brand awareness, and encouraging Mac purchases for a total digital hub experience.

Pepsi's iTunes Music Store giveaway will begin on February 1. Yellow caps noting the 100 million song giveaway will have a 1 in 3 chance of winning.

Jobs also noted that iTunes Music Store has 70% of the market share for online music purchasing; that 50,000 audio books were sold in the previous quarter; and that 500,000 songs are now online.
