Subscribe to the new feed anyhow though and find out for yourself. I think my paid time on the Radio Community Server is about up, so all this will fade to nothingness soon. See you on the other side.

I'll be coming back soon...

Okay... yeah... blog output has been next to nonexistant lately. I've moved back to my G3 400 since I've been working at home, I have a new desk, and I wanted to have have the luxurious 17" 1280 x 1024 of my apple studio display. I've been doing a lot of design work lately and the iBook LCD just doesn't cut it. I strangely miss the iBook's keyboard though. Typing on this thing feels so nice compared to my old apple keyboard with the half size function keys that came with my G3... anyhow... if you can't tell I don't want to try to move Radio over to the G3. I've had the urge to blog on many many occasions lately, but I don't want to pull out the iBook to to write an entry so... I'm looking for something new. Tried to decide between MoveableType and Bloxsom. Bloxsom won. I hate perl, but, well... Bloxsom seems to fit better with my long term goals for my internet life... more will be coming soon. Promise.

Sometimes self-employment is great

For some reason I'm nowhere near tired and have no classes, or anything else in particular I need to wake up early for tomorrow, so what am I doing? Working. I'm sitting on my couch listening to Clutch with my iBook at 12:30 and working. What's not so great? The $1000 in outstanding work and my empty bank account :) Sometimes the tradeoff just feels worth it though. Oh yeah, can't forget the can of Natural Ice on the coffee table by my feet. Poor people aren't picky about their beer. It could be worse, I could be drinking Milwaukee's Best, or Keystone, or god forbid Josef Hoffbauer ;) There's something wrong if a 12 pack is only $4.

Cool things to do with PDF Workflow

Ever run across an article that you don't have time read read as you're sifting through the morning news? I usually leave them open in Chimera or minimize them to the dock, but sometimes I'll have to restart or Chimera will crash and bye bye articles. Well no more. Check this out.
Update: Maybe I'm just an idiot, but every time I try to save with one of the custom locations I get the message "Error while printing" Anyone have any ideas? They finally let me go. I have a lot of memories of this building. After all, it isn't the first time I've left here, but it will be the last. I spent my dotcom years in the offices here. During the decline, I left to work for a consulting company for about 9 months before they kind of collapsed under their own weight. I came back to this building, not as a dot-comer, but as a lowly webmaster. It's served me well since I've been back in school for the last 3 semesters, but all things good must end. This is the 4th company I've worked for since 1998 that has collapsed. This time it was a manufacturing company though. Not much technology going on here. Times like this cause one to reflect. Where will I go now? Consulting. Already been doing it for the last few months. Where do I want to go? Far away from computers. It's just not fun anymore. Will I update my weblog more often now? Hopefully. Will it be more personal? Definitely. Will I wake up tomorrow as a new person? I wake up as a new person every morning. Am I going to the bar tonight? Without a doubt. ;)

SQL Server 7 and Mac OS X

My first foray into the nasty world of consulting in awhile unfortunately involves Cold Fusion and MS SQL Server. (Thank god no ASP =) What would be the best way to connect to SQL Server from my iBook? I don't want to use Virtual PC, too slow. Anyhow I ended up grabbing a trial of SQLGrinder. It's not exactly what I want, but it's close enough. Microsoft has a JDBC driver for SQL Server 2000, but not for 7. A google search turned up jTDS. I put the jTDS driver into ~/Application Support/SQLGrinder and added the following parameters in the drivers preference tab of SQLGrinder:

Name: SQL Server
Base Class: net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver
URL: jdbc:jtds:sqlserver
Enabled: check the check box
Things still didn't seem to be working so I opened up the connection preferences and checked the "Only Use JDBC 1.0 Features" box. Result: I can now send queries and browse the schema of a SQL Server 7 db on my iBook.

Back to the land of consulting

Well, it's about time for me to head back to the land of consulting. There's something odd going on when over half of 30 or 40 some odd employees leave or are fired and not replaced within a few months. Anyone looking for a part-time or contract web developer? Here's my resume. I'd prefer to work with Python and Zope, but in past lives I have hacked my fair share of Perl, Cold Fusion, PHP, Java, and of course SQL.
