Our office moved. We've been at our new place since Monday. I don't like our new place. Maybe because I'm not used to it yet. I hope.

Yay! I finally found out what was wrong with our SMS gateway. For something that's been bugging me for the past two days the fix was quick; it only took 5 minutes to do. The killer was in finding what was wrong with it, where the bug was. After we moved we encountered so many problems with our IT infrastructure and that equals to working until the wee hours of the morning for us.

I saw a very good movie this weekend, which had a scene that very much reminded me of my own daily rants.

I usually take the backroads out of the area I live in when leaving home for work to avoid the building up of the traffic jam which usually happens very early in the morning. The path I take goes thru a residential area whose inhabitants claim that their roads have been experiencing damage from the heavy traffic going thru their neighborhood every day. In an effort to finance the repair of the damaged roads, the residents of the vicinity set up a collection post, charging Rp. 2000 for every car that goes thru the area. They also put up a whiteboard stating the total of funds gathered so far. This morning I observed there were eight people involved in this operation which from what I see could be sufficiently run by only two, one to hand out the tickets and collect the money and another to prepare for change if necessary. Okay, I'll be a bit lenient and let one more person update the whiteboard which brings the total crew up to three people. But even then, what would the other five be doing? Have we truly become a nation of rent seekers?

Apple unveils new Internet music store with 200,000 titles available online. Each song costs 99 cents to download and has the most liberal copying rights of any online service to date. The Apple site says "In a nutshell, you can play your music on up to three computers, enjoy unlimited synching with your iPods, burn unlimited CDs of individual songs, and burn unchanged playlists up to 10 times each." Quite a deal. Too bad the service is only available in the U.S. And only for Macs. I'll fare well here with my .mp3s, thank you.

During a meeting with the Mobile Data Services division of the largest cellular carrier in the nation, I realized how arrogant they were just because of their sheer size. They think because of their 7 million subscribers and their vast network infrastructure they can control every aspect of the partnership with their content suppliers without even giving their partners a choice. Building cellular data services is a killing-a-chicken-with-a-machine-gun problem; you spray bullets all over the barn and then go in and check how many chickens you've actually killed (you get to keep them for dinner). As for the bullets that don't hit, you don't have to worry about them, they're expendable. You can just drop your unpopular services any time you want to. Carriers should make it a breeze for content providers to connect to their systems and allow them to do it in the shortest time possible. Furthermore, carriers should share with their content partners a significant amount of the revenues generated from these services. It's called incentive. It's something every mobile operator here ought to understand. 7 million customers or not.
